  • C Studies of Natural Ice

    Open Access•A T Wilson•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•Citada por: 1•Referências: 15

There are many kinds of natural ice found on our planet. These include glacier ice, ice sheets, cave ice, massive ground ice, ice-wedge ice and permafrost ice. The problems associated with the recovery and dating of the CO 2 and other gases contained in these kinds of ice is reviewed. New data are presented on various kinds of natural ice. How this kind of data can be used to help determine the origin and history of natural ice samples is discuss…

  • Application of AMS 14 C Dating to Ice Core Research

    Open Access•A T Wilson•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1995•Citada por: 4•Referências: 8

I describe here the use of the accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) sublimation technique to 14 C-date polar ice cores. An unexpected result of this work has been to extend the understanding of how polar ice sheets entrap and record the past composition of the Earth's atmosphere. This work has led to the discovery of a new phenomenon in which CO 2 and other greenhouse gases can be entrapped in cold (never melted) polar ice sheets

  • AMS Radiocarbon Dating of Ice

    Open Access•A T Wilson, D J Donahue•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•Citada por: 2•Referências: 4

In the “sublimation technique,” carbon dioxide entrapped in ice is recovered by sublimation, converted to graphite and ratio of 14 C/ 13 C in the CO 2 determined by AMS measurements. We describe here several experiments performed to check the validity of such measurements and to study the effect of cosmogenically produced in-situ 14 C on the measurements

  • A Simple Technique for Converting CO 2 to AMS Target Graphite

    Open Access•A T Wilson•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•Citada por: 5

I describe a simple, rapid and inexpensive method for converting CO 2 samples into AMS target graphite. The technique is applicable for both small- and large-scale production facilities. With some modification, the method is suitable for use with very small samples

  • The Recovery and Dating of Carbon Dioxide in Polar Ice Cores

    A T Wilson, D J Donahue•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1989•Citada por: 1

A new method is described for recovering trapped CO 2 from polar ice cores. The ice is sublimed under vacuum, and H 2 O vapor and CO 2 are collected at appropriate cold traps. The application of this method to obtain CO 2 from a specific ice core, the conversion of that CO 2 to graphite, and the measurement of radiocarbon in the CO 2 are described in detail. The potentialities and problems of the method are discussed

  • AMS Radiocarbon Dating of Bones at Arizona

    Austin Long, A T Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1989•Citada por: 14

Modern bone contains ca 25% protein material, most of which is collagen. Amino acids separated from collagen isolated from bone are suitable for 14 C dating of fossil bone, but attempts to carry out this procedure on bones seriously depleted in protein can yield erroneous 14 C dates. Amino-acid analysis of fossil bone gives quantitative information on the degree of preservation of its organic component. Also, the relative abundance of the amino-a…

  • Late Pleistocene Glacial Chronology of the Taylor Valley, Antarctica, and the Global Climate

    Open Access•Chris H Hendy, TERRY R HEALY et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1979

Carbonate-rich lacustrine and deltaic deposits, containing thin beds of finely laminated carbonates and thick beds of silt, crop out at several sites in the Taylor Valley and have been encountered in cores obtained by the Dry Valley Drilling Project (DVDP). Fragments of the more indurated carbonate beds have widespread occurrence as part of the desert “lag gravel” which covers much of the valley floor. Analysis of the carbonates suggests that the…
