The Roman World from Romulus to Muhammad
This volume provides a detailed examination of nearly 1,400 years of Roman history, from the foundation of the city in the eighth century BC until the evacuation of Roman troops from Alexandria in AD 642 in the face of the Arab conquests. Drawing on a vast array of ancient texts written in Latin, Greek, Syriac, Armenian, and Arabic, and relying on a host of inscriptions, archaeological data, and the evidence from ancient art, architecture, and co…

Writing the History of the “Persian Arabs”
Modern scholarship on Arabs in the pre-Islamic period has focused on Rome's Arab allies—the so-called “Jafnids” or “Ghassānids,” with much less attention paid to Persia's Arab allies, the so-called “Naṣrid” or “Lakhmid” dynasty of Arab leaders at al-Ḥīrah in Iraq. This article examines select pre-Islamic sources for the Persian Arabs, showing that even with the meager evidence available to us, and the lack of archaeological material, it is possib…
The Late Antique Church at Tall al-ʿUmayrī East
The discovery of a new church inscription referring to the Jafnid (or “Ghassānid”) leader al-Mundhir in northern Jordan provides new insights into the activities of the family in the region and is a valuable addition to the epigraphic corpus concerning the Jafnids. The initial publication of the inscription in ADAJ, as part of the excavation report, was necessarily limited in its analytical scope. Here we take the opportunity to build on those in…
Mavia, queen
Queen Mavia (fl. 375 CE ) is a recurring character in general histories of the Roman Near East (Ball 2001; Butcher 2003) or accounts of Roman frontiers, policy, and diplomacy (Whittaker 1994; Blockley 1992).
Effectuation, Causation, and Bricolage
This study provides a critical examination of how different theoretical perspectives in entrepreneurship research translate into individual behavior, and whether such behavior is evident in the creation and development of new ventures. Using an alternative templates research methodology, the behaviors underlying the theories of effectuation, causation, and bricolage are evaluated to see whether such behaviors are observable in case study data des…

A New Perspective on Rome's Desert Frontier
While the debate over the origin and purpose of the Limes Arabicus continues, the widespread and largely peaceful abandonment of its fortifications lacks a convincing explanation. Did Justinian's disbandment of the limitanei mark the decisive end of the limes (after S. T. Parker), or did the Saracen "threat" simply not warrant a fortified frontier (after D. Graf)? This study offers a new perspective, suggesting that a combination of elements ensu…
Optimal distinctiveness
Research summary : A ttaining optimal distinctiveness—positive stakeholder perceptions about a firm's strategic position that reconciles competing demands for differentiation and conformity—has been an important focal point for scholarship at the interface of strategic management and institutional theory. We provide a comprehensive review of this literature and situate studies on optimal distinctiveness in the broader scholarly effort to integrat…
Using Theory Elaboration to Make Theoretical Advancements
We describe an actionable research approach for addressing current challenges to theoretical advancement labeled theory elaboration. Theory elaboration is the process of conceptualizing and executing empirical research using preexisting conceptual ideas or a preliminary model as a basis for developing new theoretical insights by contrasting, specifying, or structuring theoretical constructs and relations to account for and explain empirical obser…
