  • An in-depth interview study of women's perspectives on the effects of contraceptive use on future fertility in Ethiopia and Kenya

Open Access•Kristen Kirksey, Hanna Feleke et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Qualitative Research in…•2025

Infertility is a common perceived side effect of contraceptive use among women in sub-Saharan Africa, and fear of infertility can affect contraceptive choices. While no choice is inherently negative, it is critical that women have accurate information about side effects to ensure contraceptive decision-making agency. Despite the prevalence of infertility fears, little is known about women's specific beliefs, where they originate, and how they inf…

  • Influence of social networks on women’s contraceptive decision-making and action

Open Access•Catherine Birabwa, Dinah Amongin et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Our study highlights how different types of social support from partners, relatives, and peers can either bolster or undermine women's agency in making contraceptive decisions. Informational support from relatives and peers can boost women's certainty in their intentions, while emotional support from partners boosts their confidence to act on these intentions. Multipronged approaches targeting these networks are necessary to promote women's agenc…

  • Development and Validation of the Agency in Contraceptive Decisions Scale in Uganda and Nigeria

    Open Access•Sneha Challa, Ushma D Upadhyay et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2025•Referências: 40

To fill a gap in measures of empowered contraceptive decision‐making, we developed the Agency in Contraceptive Decisions Scale in Uganda and Nigeria. We developed an item pool drawing on the previously published Contraceptive Agency framework. We refined items through cognitive interviews ( N = 80) and expert feedback and piloted a reduced item pool via surveys ( N = 3002). Exploratory factor analysis using a random half of the sample suggested a…

  • Person‐Centered Measurement

Open Access•C Rothschild, Kelsey Holt et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2025•Citada por: 1•Referências: 29

Despite growing enthusiasm for measurement approaches that capture individuals’ needs, values, and preferences, there remains a lack of conceptual clarity regarding person‐centered measurement in the global field of contraception. In this commentary, we propose a working definition of person‐centered measurement within the contraceptive field and describe how this definition can be applied to existing and novel contraceptive indicators. We argue …

Realizamos 25 entrevistas semiest…

  • Women's Perspectives on the Unique Benefits and Challenges of Self‐Injectable Contraception

Open Access•Emily Himes, Lauren Suchman et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2024•Referências: 25

Implementing self‐injection (SI) of subcutaneous depot‐medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA‐SC) is a key self‐care strategy for sexual and reproductive health, but SI uptake remains low, and assertions about the potential of SI to increase women's control over contraceptive use lack evidence. We sought to qualitatively explore how women with diverse contraceptive experiences—including those with and without experience using SI—view the benefits and …

  • Analyzing fast and slow

    Open Access•Lauren Suchman, Elizabeth Omoluabi et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 5

Much of the methodological literature on rapid qualitative analysis describes processes used by a relatively small number of researchers focusing on one study site and using rapid analysis to replace a traditional analytical approach. In this paper, we describe the experiences of a transnational research consortium integrating both rapid and traditional qualitative analysis approaches to develop social theory while also informing program design. …

  • Validation and Predictive Utility of a Person‐Centered Quality of Contraceptive Counseling (QCC‐10) Scale in Sub‐Saharan Africa

    Open Access•Cary Karp, Funmilola M Olaolorun et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2023•Citada por: 4•Referências: 38

The lack of validated, cross‐cultural measures for examining quality of contraceptive counseling compromises progress toward improved services. We tested the validity and reliability of the 10‐item Quality of Contraceptive Counseling scale (QCC‐10) and its association with continued protection from unintended pregnancy and person‐centered outcomes using longitudinal data from women aged 15–49 in Burkina Faso, Kenya, and Nigeria. Psychometric anal…

  • Preference‐Aligned Fertility Management as a Person‐Centered Alternative to Contraceptive Use‐Focused Measures

Open Access•Kelsey Holt, Christine Galavotti et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2023•Citada por: 17•Referências: 22

Equating contraceptive use with programmatic success is fundamentally flawed in failing to account for whether individuals desire contraceptive use; this is problematic because nonuse can reflect empowered decision‐making and use may reflect an individual's inability to refuse or discontinue a method. A rights‐based approach demands respect for individuals’ freedom to weigh options and choose how their desire for pregnancy prevention can be accom…

Open Access•Kelsey Holt, Icela Zavala et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2019•Citada por: 7•Referências: 27

We developed the Quality of Contraceptive Counseling (QCC) Scale to improve measurement of client experiences with providers in the era of rights‐based service delivery. We generated scale items drawing on the previously published QCC Framework and qualitative research on women's preferences for counseling in Mexico, and refined them through cognitive interviews (n = 29) in two Mexican states. The item pool was reduced from 35 to 22 items after p…

Open Access•Amy Weintraub, Joanne E Mantell et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2017

Relatively few empirical investigations of the intersection of HIV biomedical and traditional medicine have been undertaken. As part of preliminary work for a longitudinal study investigating health-seeking behaviours among newly diagnosed individuals living with HIV, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 24 urban South Africans presenting for HIV testing or newly enrolled in HIV care; here we explored participants' views on African tradit…

Recent media coverage and case reports have highlighted women's attempts to end their pregnancies by self-inducing abortions in the United States. This study explored women's motivations for attempting self-induction of abortion. We surveyed women in clinic waiting rooms in Boston, San Francisco, New York, and a city in Texas to identify women who had attempted self-induction. Jeffrey J Sacks, Kelsey Holt et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•Citada por: 9•Referências: 7

We identified 684 playground hazards in 66 child care centers despite regulations mandating that the grounds be hazard-free. Of 21 centers with less than or equal to 5 hazards, 42.9 percent reported a playground-related injury in the previous year; of 25 centers with 6-11 hazards, 52.0 percent reported a playground-related injury; and of 20 centers with greater than or equal to 12 hazards, 60.0 percent reported a playground-related injury.
