Keeping young researchers out of harm’s way
Introduction: Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) is an approach to conducting research with youth populations in order to effectively engage youth in research that impacts their lives. Young people experiencing homelessness (YEH) are vulnerable to power and social environments in ways that call attention to their experiences in research. Methods: The context for this paper was a qualitative YPAR project to incorporate youth voice into the…
Positive and Negative Experiences With Supportive Services and Programming
Services for youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) are designed with limited input from the youth themselves. This study explored the experiences and recommendations for services aimed at mitigating the negative effects of homelessness among youth. A total of 45 interviews were conducted with YEH (ages 15 to 24, M = 21.5 years) who experienced at least one night of homelessness. Transcripts were coded by using a modified constructivist grounded t…
Latinx Adolescent Perspectives on the Effects of United States Immigration Policy on Wellbeing
In a prospective cohort study of Latinx adolescents living in an agricultural county in California, we examined perceptions of federal immigration policy and its effects on community and individual wellbeing. From May to December 2017, 565 youth responded to an open-ended item integrated into ongoing surveys. Median age was 14 (range 13-16 years), 53% female, and 94% Latinx. About 12% were immigrants, 71% children of immigrant parents, and 52% ha…
Health risk associated with residential relocation among people who inject drugs in Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA
PWID who have relocated in the past 30 days have higher odds of experiencing violence and life- threatening adverse outcomes, and policies that disrupt living circumstances of PWID should be ended in favor of those that support housing stability
Analyzing U.S. tweets for stigma against people experiencing homelessness
Rising homelessness in the United States has been a considerable source of concern, with policymakers and community members calling for “solutions.” Stigma, as a societal barrier to addressing inequity, is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality for people experiencing homelessness (PEH) and presents a barrier to the proposed solutions. Given that using surveys to study stigma against PEH carries potential social desirability bias, our res…
Family and School Connectedness Associated with Lower Depression among Latinx Early Adolescents in an Agricultural County
Depression constitutes one of the greatest sources of morbidity and mortality for U.S. adolescents. Latinx are the fastest growing U.S. adolescent population, particularly in rural communities, and suffer from depression at higher rates than other racial/ethnic groups. Informed by community perspectives on adolescent health, we examined factors associated with depression among Latinx early adolescents in an agricultural community. We surveyed 599…
We Don't Fear HIV. We Just Fear Walking around Pregnant.”
In Kenya, adolescent pregnancy rates are high, contraception utilization is low, and adolescent sexuality is stigmatized. We describe how perceptions of sexuality and pregnancy stigma influence decision‐making among adolescents in the informal settlements of Kisumu. We used purposive sampling to recruit 120 adolescent boys and girls aged 15–19 for focus group discussions. A semistructured interview guide was used to elicit social norms and commun…
“My Hope Is . . . ”
Many youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) are surprisingly hopeful. We propose a typology of the hopes for the future (HFTF) of YEH, based on a qualitative study employing grounded theory. YEH fell into four categories: (a) nonmainstream HFTF youth who wished to escape the mainstream, (b) mainstream HFTF youth who wished to integrate into the mainstream, (c) marijuana-economy HFTF youth who aspired to escape homelessness by entering the marijuan…
Food insecurity among formerly homeless youth in supportive housing
Structural violence and food insecurity in the lives of formerly homeless young adults living in permanent supportive housing
In this study, we explore the interconnections between structural violence and food insecurity in the lives of formerly homeless young adults living in permanent supportive housing. Using photovoice, participants identified several forms of structural violence that constrain their ability to access adequate and healthy food, including: insufficient funding through government assistance programs to cover monthly food costs; the lack of affordable,…

Marginalization and Community Perception of HIV Care, Treatment, and Support on Mfangano Island, Kenya
HIV-related consequences at the individual, household, and community levels have adversely affected how Mfangano communities respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Community-based strategies are needed to address interrelated inequities at multiple levels. Changing community perception may overcome HIV stigma to enable individual readiness to seek care. Access to care and treatment enhances productivity and hence social capital in HIV-affected househo…
Building social capital to promote adolescent wellbeing
Adolescents in this agricultural community identified robust sources of bonding social capital within their families. However, they identified limitations in their families' capacities to link them to structural resources in education, employment, and health care that could support healthful behaviors and upward social mobility
Violent Injury and Neighborhood Racial/Ethnic Diversity in Oakland, California
A moral case for universal healthcare for runaway and homeless youth
Purpose Runaway and homeless youth (RHY) are among the most vulnerable youth globally. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) states that all children have the right to the highest level of health, and that universal healthcare rights are afforded to RHY and all children. Social determinants of health (SDH) are universal factors that frame the experiences of RHY as facilitators or barriers for accessing healthcare. The p…

“It is all about the fear of being discriminated [against]…the person suffering from HIV will not be accepted”
Interventions focusing on reduction of stigma, increasing safe disclosure of HIV status, and improved dependent relationships may improve retention in care of YLWH

Youth homelessness in San Francisco
Fidelity Management
This qualitative study examined how adolescents conceptualize sexual behavior. Open-ended interviews about sex were conducted with a sample of 21 male and 18 female African- American adolescents. Topics related to health risk virtually never emerged in their responses. The topic of partner infidelity and concerns about control of infidelity, on the other hand, were mentioned extensively. Informants described a cycle in which commitment to a partn…
