Changes in Muscle Thickness after 8 Weeks of Strength Training, Electromyostimulation, and Both Combined in Healthy Young Adults
The aim of this study was to verify and compare the effects of electromyostimulation training (EMS), strength training (ST), and both combined (STEMS), through the analysis of the elbow flexors muscle thickness. Forty subjects (24.45 ± 3.53 years), were randomly divided equally in 4 groups: 3 experimental groups and 1 control group. Each experimental group was submitted to one of three interventions, either an ST protocol, an EMS protocol, or a S…
Impact of IMCI health worker training on routinely collected child health indicators in Northeast Brazil
The Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) is a global strategy including improvements in case management at health facilities, strengthening health systems support and improving key family and community practices relevant to child health. In Brazil, IMCI was introduced in 1997, being largely restricted to training health workers in case management. IMCI training of doctors and nurses took place in many municipalities, but implementati…
Context matters
Appropriate consideration of contextual factors is essential for ensuring internal and external validity of randomized and non-randomized evaluations. Contextual factors may confound the association between delivery of the intervention and its potential health impact. They may also modify the effect of the intervention or programme, thus affecting the generalizability of results. This is particularly true for large-scale health programmes, for wh…
Capacity constraints to the adoption of new interventions
Information on how health workers spend their time can help programme managers determine whether it is possible to add new services or activities to their schedules and at what cost. One set of interventions with the potential to reduce under-five mortality is training of facility-based health workers according to the guidelines for Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI), along with improvements to supervision, procurement and informat…

Effect of Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) on health worker performance in Northeast-Brazil
A multi-country evaluation is being carried out in Brazil and four other countries to determine the effectiveness, cost, and impact of the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI). We examine the effect of IMCI on the quality of health care provided to children under five visiting health facilities. A health facility survey was conducted at 24 facilities (12 with IMCI) in each of four States in the Northeast. We assessed the quality of c…
