Covenants
As a term in the Hebrew Bible, covenant was discussed in early Christian writings initially in the context of polemics with Jews. It served a useful purpose in arguments against heretics who rejected or disparaged the Old Testament as illustrating an unfolding purpose of God. The word continued in comments on biblical passages. The varied applications of the distinction of the covenants reflect the importance of the idea in the interpretation of …

Baptism
Baptism was the central act in the ceremony of initiation into the Christian church. It was normally administered by immersion to penitents upon a confession of faith in Jesus Christ. Christian usage preferred the Greek form baptisma (“dipping” or “plunging”) over baptismos (used more often for non‐Christian rites), which, however, gave the common Latin transliteration baptismus .
Regula Fidei
Regula fidei (“Rule of Faith”) was the Latin phrase used for a summary of the main points of Christian faith.
Penance
In Roman Catholic theology penance is the sacrament of forgiveness for postbaptismal sin. The medieval theology and procedures were a development from early Christian beliefs and penitential practices. Some Hellenistic cults observed the confession of sins, and rabbinic Judaism developed disciplinary procedures differing according to the severity of the offense.
Serapion of Thmuis
Serapion (Latin; or Sarapion, Greek) was bishop of Thmuis in the Nile Delta from about 339 to 360 ce . Before becoming bishop he was abbot of a monastery.
Eucharist
The Eucharist, a communion of Bread and wine, was the central act of the weekly Christian assembly.

Early Christians Speak
These studies in early church history cover various aspects of the church life of early Christians. They focus on the second century. Preaching at Epiphany
From as early as 200 C.E., the church made the spring paschal celebration its primary occasion for baptizing new converts. A week of intense preparation climaxed for the candidates in their reception of baptism early on Easter Sunday. During the fourth century, the preliminary preparation of candidates during Lent included attendance at lectures that gave doctrinal instruction. The catechumens who were ready to receive baptism at the coming Pasch…

Political Economy, Public Liberty, and the Formation of the Constitution
Do URING the presidential campaign of i8oo, the Philadelphia merchant Charles Pettit wrote a pamphlet entitled An Impartial Review of the Rise and Progress of the Controversy between the Parties Known by the Names of the Federalists, and Republicans. His thesis was that the current political arguments repeated those of the past and that the basic issues dividing Americans had always been the same, namely, a difference of opinion as to the legitim…

Speculation in the Revolutionary Debt
Historians have taken it for granted that the Revolutionary, debt was fairly well concentrated before it was funded in 1790, but they have not been able to support this view with concrete evidence. Most of the people living at the time thought the same thing but were likewise unable to prove it. The truth could not be known until Hamilton's funding operation assembled the securities that made up the debt. Under the act of 1790 a new federal loan …

Eusebius and Ordination
The Ecclesiastical History of Eusebius employs a variety of expressions in describing the episcopal successions of the important churches. Some of these are theologically colourless, as the forms of λαμβάνειν to declare that one has ‘received’ the episcopate, or often the ‘ministry’ (λειτουργία), of a given church. Other formulae are related to the most important motifs associated with ordination in the ancient Church
Business, Government, and Congressional Investigation in the Revolution
A NORMAL aftermath of war is the exposure of the inefficiency and graft that occurred in waging it. Among the wars of the United States, the Revolution was notable for the degree to which there was a general public awareness of the sins of administration. The common opinion was that government officials were corrupt. More responsible than anything else for this feeling was the fact that procurement services were staffed with merchants who remaine…
Currency Finance
HE accepted view of the financial and monetary history of the American colonies needs revision. It owes too much to the influence of nineteenth-century scholars who were themselves partisans in currency disputes. In their own day, William G. Sumner, Albert S. Bolles, Charles J. Bullock, and Andrew M. Davis stood for sound against inflationist movements. One of their chief aims was to show the disastrous effects of wandering off the straight line …

Attitudes to schism at the council of Nicaea
The council of Nicaea in AD 325 had to deal with disciplinary matters related to three schisms or heresies in addition to Arianism. The persons involved were the clergy among the followers of Meletius, Novatian, and Paul of Samosata. The interpretation given in the standard history of the councils by Hefele and Leclercq is that the fathers at Nicaea did not require a new ordination of Novatian and Meletian clergymen who returned to the catholic C…
