Reconsidering Domesticity through the Lens of Empire and Settler Society in North America
Our reconsideration of domesticity comes at a time when empire and colonial and postcolonial categories of analysis are informing many fields of historical study. This essay traces the historiographic origins of the intersection of domesticity and empire, focusing on domesticity's usefulness as a window on cross-cultural intimacy and conflict. In her last public speech Angelina Grimké proceeded despite the siege of the building by an anti-abolitionist mob. This was her only speech to be transcribed — in a shorthand process that was called phonographic. Her oratory shows that she had become adept at improvisation. Bracketed comments about the mob’s assault were added by the transcriber.
Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society
This report views the remarkable events of 1837 from the perspective of the largest women’s antislavery society. The society’s annual financial report shows how it spent its money, and its constitution probably served as the model for many other Garrisonian groups.
