  • Living Two Lives

    Katharine R Parkes, Susan C Carnell et al.•ARTICLE•Community Work & Family•2005•Citada por: 14•Referências: 29

The work pattern of North Sea oil workers (typically, 2–3 weeks offshore alternating with a similar period of leave) imposes significant demands on the families concerned. The effects of 'intermittent husband absence' were recognized in the 1980s, but little recent research has focused on the adaptation of offshore families in spite of changes in the industry, in local communities, and in society more widely. The material reported here was derive…

  • The effects of transition stress

    Open Access•Penny Moyle, Katharine R Parkes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•1999•Referências: 4

Survey participants (N=175) were drawn from six branches of a major British supermarket chain. Employees from three branches, who had been selected for transfer to new stores, were surveyed before and after relocation to examine the impact of this transition on individual well-being. A comparison sample of employees, drawn from similar stores but not involved in relocation, was also surveyed. Cross-sectional multiple regression analyses found tha…

  • Work characteristics and well‐being among psychiatric health‐care staff

    Open Access•Katharine R Parkes, Caroline Von Rabenau•ARTICLE•Journal of Community & Applied…•1993•Citada por: 2•Referências: 4

Research into stress among health care professionals has tended to neglect staff employed in psychiatric settings. This article reports a study of psychiatric health care workers which focuses on objective work factors (job type, and community versus hospital setting) and the subjective work environment (perceived demand, discretion, and supervisor and co‐worker support) as predictors of two affective outcomes (somatic symptoms and job satisfacti…

  • Locus of control as moderator

    Open Access•Katharine R Parkes•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1991•Citada por: 5

Research based on Karasek's (1979) model of work stress has produced conflicting results; although some evidence of the demand × discretion interactions predicted by the model has been reported, most studies have failed to demonstrate interactive effects in relation to mental health outcomes. The present article investigates locus of control (LOC) as a potential moderator of demand/discretion effects. In a sample of civil servants (N = 590), regr…

  • The Performance and Subsequent Employment Status of PGCE Students

    Open Access•Katharine R Parkes•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•1989•Citada por: 1•Referências: 25

Although much research has been carried out into factors which predict the academic performance of undergraduates, less attention has been given to predictors of success in postgraduate training. In the present study, the extent to which demographic, academic and attitudinal factors predicted the teaching practice and coursework performance of Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) students was examined. Factual information was obtained fro…

  • Coping in stressful episodes

    Katharine R Parkes•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1986•Citada por: 24

Theoretical models emphasize the importance of person and environmental variables in stress and coping processes. This article examines individual differences (extraversion and neuroticism), environmental factors (social support and work demand), and situational characteristics (type of stressful episode and its perceived importance) as predictors of three self-report measures of coping (general coping, direct coping, and suppression) derived fro…

  • Stressful episodes reported by first-year student nurses

    Open Access•Katharine R Parkes•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•1985•Citada por: 6•Referências: 32

  • Locus of control, cognitive appraisal, and coping in stressful episodes

    Katharine R Parkes•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1984•Citada por: 1

Evidence suggests that internals and externals differ in the nature and effectiveness of their coping behavior. This study investigated locus of control and coping processes in relation to specific stressful episodes reported by 171 female student nurses. Scores on each of three measures (General Coping, Direct Coping, and Suppression) that were derived from the "Ways of Coping" Questionnaire were analyzed to examine the role of appraisal (in ter…

  • The Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ) and its correlates

    Open Access•D E Broadbent, D Ε Broadbent et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Clinical…•1982

This paper describes a questionnaire measure of self‐reported failures in perception, memory, and motor function. Responses to all questions tend to be positively correlated, and the whole questionnaire correlates with other recent measures of self‐reported deficit in memory, absent‐mindedness, or slips of action. The questionnaire is however only weakly correlated with indices of social desirability set or of neuroticism. It is significantly cor…
