  • Changing Undergraduate Funding Mix and Graduate Degree Attainment

Byeongdon Oh, Changhwan Kim•ARTICLE•The Journal of Higher Education•2023•Referências: 41

Previous studies of the role of college students’ funding sources in their educational outcomes have focused on individual funding sources and have not paid much attention to the mixing of multiple sources. As rising college tuition has heightened the financial burden on college students, the use of multiple funding sources has become an adaptive funding strategy for completing a college degree. Using discrete funding-source information from the …

  • Family Socioeconomic Background and the Gender Difference in the Likelihood of Graduate Education

  • Adaptation Strategy of the Upper Class and Fairness in Elite College Admission

Changhwan Kim, Heeyoun Shin•ARTICLE•Korean Journal of Sociology•2020

  • Has Generational Inequality Increased? Decomposition of the Between- and Within-Generational Inequality, 1999~2019

Changhwan Kim, Andrew Taeho Kim•ARTICLE•Korean Journal of Sociology•2020

    Open Access•Changhwan Kim, Arthur Sakamoto•ARTICLE•Demography•2017•Citada por: 6•Referências: 38

This study investigates gender-specific changes in the total financial return to education among persons of prime working ages (35–44 years) using U.S. Census data from 1990 and 2000, and the 2009–2011 American Community Survey. We define the total financial return to education as the family standard of living as measured by family income adjusted for family size. Our results indicate that women experienced significant progress in educational att…

Differences in lifetime earnings by educational attainment have been of great research and policy interest. Although a large literature examines earnings differences by educational attainment, research on lifetime earnings—which refers to total accumulated earnings from entry into the labor market until retirement—remains limited because of the paucity of adequate data. • Assessing the Consequences of Declining Unionization and Public-Sector Employment

    Open Access•Changhwan Kim, Arthur Sakamoto•ARTICLE•Work and Occupations•2010•Citada por: 4•Referências: 60

This study defines four sectors of labor markets based on union membership and public-sector employment. Using the current population surveys from 1983 to 2005, the authors decompose the growth of wage inequality into compositional changes, group-specific mean changes, and group-specific variance changes. This approach allows one to more precisely identify and assess the immediate intervening processes associated with rising wage inequality. The …

    Open Access•Changhwan Kim•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•2010•Citada por: 17•Referências: 40

This article extends the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition method to the decomposition of changes in the wage gap between white and black men over time. The previously implemented technique, in which the contributions of two decomposition components are estimated by subtracting those at time 0 from the corresponding ones at time 1, can yield an untenable conclusion about the extent to which the contributions of the coefficient and endowment effects ac…

  • Socioeconomic Attainments of Asian Americans

Arthur Sakamoto, Kimberly A Goyette et al.•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Sociology•2009•Citada por: 135•Referências: 71

According to the majority-minority paradigm, racial and ethnic minorities have lower socioeconomic characteristics than whites owing to discrimination. Asian Americans defy this conventional view, however, at least on average. Asian Americans tend to have higher mean levels of educational achievements, and several recent studies indicate approximate parity with whites in most arenas of the labor market for those Asian Americans who were schooled …

    Open Access•Changhwan Kim, Arthur Sakamoto•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•2008•Citada por: 101•Referências: 55

Wage inequality has increased dramatically in the United States since the 1980s. This article investigates the relationship between this trend and occupational structure measured at the three-digit level. Using the Current Population Survey from 1983 to 2002, we find that the direct association between occupations and wage inequality declined over this period as within-occupational inequality grew faster than betweenoccupational inequality. We es…

While it is likely that patterns of racial discrimination occur in some types of jobs more than others, little empirical research has examined the effect of race across segmented labor markets. Incorporating two decades of comparable General Social Survey data, this article revisits William J. Wilson's hypothesis that the significance of race in deter…

  • Has Generational Inequality Increased? Decomposition of the Between- and Within-Generational Inequality, 1999~2019

Changhwan Kim, Andrew Taeho Kim•ARTICLE•Korean Journal of Sociology•2020

  • Family Socioeconomic Background and the Gender Difference in the Likelihood of Graduate Education
