Navigating the crisis – media activism on gender-based violence during the pandemic. Results from a longitudinal multi-method study
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a fundamental safety risk and major public health issue for women and genderqueer individuals. This paper examines online activist media practices in the German discourse on GBV during the COVID-19 pandemic, which exacerbated GBV. Using a practice theory approach to social media activism, we analyzed how different actors, such as feminist activists and journalists, engage in public discourse on GBV relationally. We …
On the relationship between journalism and activism
Images, clusters and types – Making sense of (large) image corpora and related practices in and with digital media
In November 2021, the Visual Communication Division of the German Communication Association (DGPuK) celebrated its 20th anniversary at the University of Trier with a one-year pandemic delay. Marion G. Müller, Katharina Christ and Christof Barth organized an excellent conference to mark the occasion and to reflect on past and current trends, topics, and challenges in visual communication research. Resuming the thematic scope of the division’s firs…
Countering or Reinforcing (Gendered) Inequalities? Ramifications of the Covid-19 Pandemic in and Through Media
The Covid-19 pandemic reveals and exacerbates inequalities in various ways. Gender inequalities—intertwined with intersectional differences along class, ethnicity, or origin—are highly visible. Legacy and social media around the world cover and perform these issues as much as they conceal them. On the one hand, they have the ability to give those affected a voice and to intervene in public discourse. On the other hand, they reproduce stereotypes …
Negotiating Care Work
Precarious conditions of care work are contested and deeply gendered issues all over the globe. The Covid-19 pandemic both intensifies the (national) care crises and makes care work more visible as a public issue. In this article, we ask for the opportunities, structural conditions, and limitations of voice and visibility in emerging publics beyond established media organizations. Applying the concept of performative publics and using social netw…
Image networks and practice analysis of larger data corpora. An approach to cluster and recontextualize visual practice in social media
This paper reports a methodological exploration combining image network analysis and standardized practice analysis on social media data. Through applying the open source software Memespector to access the Clarifai API, the potential of an easy-at-hand image tagging tool as an instrument to manage larger data corpora is explored. Using the example of the German-speaking Twitter hashtag #systemrelevant, we relate image clusters to the results of s…
Making (female) health care work matter
Over the last two years, digital media have contributed significantly to increasing the visibility of those who are outstandingly challenged by the pandemic. In Germany, the Twitter hashtag #systemrelevant [systemically relevant] initiated a public debate on values and working conditions. Applying the practice-theory-based concept of performative publics, we analyze the formation of this specific public with a special focus on its gendered struct…

Infrastructuring Publics
This volume focuses on the ongoing accomplishments entailed in the mutual making of infrastructures and publics. In doing so, it reframes the relation of publics and infrastructures as praxeological, exploring them from two different angles: (1) When, under which conditions and by what means are publics cooperatively produced, practically embedded and socio-technically infrastructured? (2) When, under which circumstances and how are infrastructur…
Fan (Fiction) Acting on Media and the Politics of Appropriation
Fanfiction is the creative appropriation and transformation of existing popular media texts by fans who take stories, worlds and/or characters as starting points and create their own stories based on them. As a cultural field of practice, fanfiction questions prevalent concepts of individual authorship and proprietary of cultural goods. At the same time, fanfiction itself is challenged. Through processes of mediatization, fanfiction grew and beca…
