Matthew Fitz, Matthew M Fitz et al.•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2020

  • Sleeping with the enemy? Biodiversity conservation, corporations and the green economy

    Open Access•W M Adams, William Adams•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Ecology•2017•Citada por: 9

This article explores the surprising closeness and apparent warmth of the relations between biodiversity conservation organisations and corporations. It argues that in this paradoxical engagement, conservationists are exhibiting an extreme form of pragmatism - a willingness to 'sleep with the enemy.' The article considers the implications of these arrangements using the metaphor of a Faustian Bargain, a deal with the devil to acquire power in exc…

  • A draft code of practice for research and monitoring in protected areas

Open Access•Marc Hockings, William Adams et al.•ARTICLE•PARKS•2013

Protected areas are favoured sites for ecological research and monitoring and responsible, well-managed research can help to improve management effectiveness and enhance conservation outcomes. Many countries have formalized processes for approving and monitoring research within their protected area systems. There are already a number of codes addressing ethical and social issues with respect to research in protected areas, sacred natural sites an…

  • Decolonizing Nature

Martin Mulligan, William Adams et al.•BOOK•Decolonizing Nature•2012•Citada por: 8

British imperialism was almost unparalleled in its historical and geographical reach, leaving a legacy of entrenched social transformation in nations and cultures in every part of the globe. Colonial annexation and government were based on an all-encompassing system that integrated and controlled political, economic, social and ethnic relations, and required a similar annexation and control of natural resources and nature itself. Colonial ideolog…

    William Adams, William J Adams•ARTICLE•Journal of Broadcasting &…•2000•Citada por: 9•Referências: 2

Using focus groups the study found viewing to be a complicated mix of both the passive and active theories of programming. While there is a real love for the medium itself, that love is based on specific programs, perceived content and a strong comfort level connected to the feeling that programs will be there when they are wanted. Participants had clear mental images of the schedule and tuned in with specific programs or channels in mind

  • Water, Rules and Gender

    Open Access•W M Adams, William Adams et al.•ARTICLE•Development and Change•1997•Citada por: 16

The management of indigenous irrigation systems has received increasing attention both from social science researchers and from those development agents who seek to change them, or to find in them a model for organizing newly developed irrigation schemes. This article discusses how water is allocated within one such irrigation system, the hill furrow irrigation of the Marakwet escarpment in Kenya. It describes the 'formal rules' of water rights, …

  • The Cambridge Companion to Marx

Open Access•Carver Carver, Paul Thomas et al.•BOOK•The Cambridge companion to Marx•1991

Marx was a highly original and polymathic thinker, unhampered by disciplinary boundaries, whose intellectual influence has been enormous. Yet in the wake of the collapse of Marxism-Leninism in Eastern Europe the question arises as to how important his work really is for us now. An important dimension of this volume is to place Marx's writings in their historical context and to separate what he actually said from what others (in particular, Engels…

  • History, Interpretation & the Politics of Theory

    William Adams, William D Adams•ARTICLE•Polity•1988

Interpretation has been an issue in political theory for nearly two decades, but its influence for the most part has been limited to problems in the history of ideas. In this article, William Adams uses the methodological claims of the "new historians" of political thought as a point of departure to argue for an interpretive approach to contemporary theory. He contends that an important part of the task of political theory is to fashion critical …

William Adams, William Howard Adams et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•1986

meticulous, well-tuned examination of what says is the decline of civic thought in America, and what might be done to restore . . . patriotism proposes to reconstruct is not the sort of narrow nationalism your political science professor may have warned you about patriotism as 'the last refuge of a scoundrel.' It is instead a patriotism that intelligently appreciates life in a (however imperfect) democratic land. Robert Marquand, The Christian Sc…

  • Public Information on Social Change

    Open Access•William Adams, Suzanne Albin•ARTICLE•Policy Studies Journal•1980•Citada por: 1•Referências: 1

This article analyzes the thematic and visual content of ten years of nightly television news coverage of women in the workforce and employment discrimination. The authors find that the total amount of coverage is small, the visual context often undercuts the usually anti‐discriminatory text, and NBC provided the most coverage. The possible sources of these patterns are examined: the elite newspaper agents, male domination of network news, decisi…
