Housing played an essential part in the global financial crisis 2007–2008 and the Euro crisis. Large parts of bank lending continue to go to mortgages. Housing wealth is the largest part of wealth for most households and is, at the same time, more dispersed than other forms of wealth. This paper examines theoretical and methodological issues in the study of African developmental states. We argue that applying this concept beyond East Asia must take into account changes in the global economic context – in particular systemic tendencies towards deficient consumer demand – to uncover the conditions under which demand for commodity production remains or becomes expansionary.
