Women’s empowerment domains
The study investigates the composition, changes, and determinants of five domains of the Women’s Empowerment Index in Agriculture (WEAI) so that domain-specific policy recommendations can be forwarded. The analysis is based on three rounds of nationally representative Bangladesh Integrated Household Surveys (BIHS) covering 2011/12–2018/19 comprising 10,107 observations and applying Tobit models. Results reveal that indices of all domains of WEAI …
Economic performance amongst English seaside towns
Within urban and tourism studies, although much research has focused on uneven city prosperity and competitiveness, little is known about factors influencing seaside town economic performance. We adopt a place-based approach to understand its determinants amongst 58 of England’s largest seaside towns drawing on a bespoke database. Through Partial Least Square analysis, Spearman’s Rank Correlation and general linear regression modelling for panel …
Farmers’ adaptation strategies to combat climate change in drought prone areas in Bangladesh
Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture
This paper examines level, inequality, and change in women’s empowerment in agriculture and its impact on crop productivity and efficiency using a nationally representative Bangladesh Integrated Household Survey (BIHS) of 5,780 and 6,195 households from the same villages in Bangladesh in 2012 and 2015 conducted by International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). Results reveal that although women’s empowerment score increased significantly f…

Investigating Multiple Domains of Household Livelihood Security
In this article, the authors construct indices of Household Livelihood Security (HLS) domains, namely, economic, food, health, and education securities and empowerment with data from 1,120 poor households in two urban settlements of Bangladesh. The authors then jointly identify domain-specific socioeconomic determinants employing a multivariate Tobit model. A quintile analysis of domains shows high levels of inequalities among these poor househol…
Impacts of climate change, agroecology and socio-economic factors on agricultural land use diversity in Bangladesh (1948–2008)
Economic drivers of contemporary smallholder agriculture in a transitional economy
Based on an in‐depth case study of a rural community, this paper documents the contemporary state of C hinese smallholder agriculture and the changes that it has been experiencing in the context of dramatic socio‐economic transition through the lens of three main economic drivers: livelihood diversification, market conditions and government interventions. Results reveal that the change in C hinese smallholder agriculture has been complex and mult…
Determinants of crop diversity in the regions of B angladesh (1990–2008)
The paper measures the level of crop diversity and identifies factors influencing diversification using a panel data of 17 regions of B angladesh covering a 19 year period (1990–2008). Results revealed the trends that agricultural areas allocated to high‐yielding variety rice, spices and vegetables has increased, while areas cultivating traditional rice, minor cereals, oilseeds, pulses, jute and sugarcane has declined at variable rates across reg…
Climate Change Response at the Farm Level
This paper provides an overview of farmers’ awareness and a typology of adaptation strategies undertaken in order to combat climate change at the farm‐level in developing countries. The review suggests that the extent to which farmers are aware of climate change is uneven, and the link between perception and action is often unclear. Farmers adopt a range of strategies from financial responses, to agricultural changes, to religious and cultural st…
Tracing the impact of market reform on productivity growth of rice at the farm level in Bangladesh
The paper measures the total factor productivity (TFP), technical change (TC) and technical efficiency change (TEC) in rice production, and traces the impact of market reform policies of the 1990s on these indices at the farm level in Bangladesh using a unique cohort of three-period panel data (1987, 2000 and 2004) of 73 farms by applying stochastic production frontier approach. Results reveal that the TFP index has increased by 27% largely due t…
Determinants of Livelihood Choices
The study identifies socio-economic determinants of livelihood choices of rural households in Bangladesh (4,195 households from 139 villages) by applying a multinomial logit model of occupational choice and a multivariate Tobit model that allows for jointness in decision making. Results reveal that households choose multiple livelihood options. A number of socio-economic factors and resources at the household level as well as the state of rural i…
Socio‐economic and ecological challenges of small‐scale fishing and strategies for its sustainable management
Socio‐economic and ecological challenges faced by the small‐scale fishers dependent on the O ld B rahmaputra R iver, B angladesh are assessed using a combination of questionnaire survey, co‐monitoring of fish catch, focus group discussions and key informant interviews. Results reveal that the fishers are involved in professional, seasonal or subsistence fishing. Fish catches from the river have declined significantly because of overfishing, destr…
Re‐examining green revolution diffusion and factor/input markets in Bangladesh after market liberalization
This paper re‐examines the effect of green revolution (GR) diffusion on factor/inputs demand in Bangladesh using an empirical model that allows for simultaneous determination of factors influencing adoption of GR technology at the current mature stage, as well as access to irrigation. Results reveal some alignments with conventional wisdom as well as few surprises. For example, while an increased demand for major inputs is expected, an increased …
Joint determination of the choice of growing season and economic efficiency of maize in Bangladesh
The paper jointly evaluates the determinants of the choice of maize growing season (winter vs. summer maize) and economic efficiency of individual producers in Bangladesh using a sample selection framework applied to stochastic frontier models. Model diagnostics reveal that sample selection bias is significant, thereby justifying the use of this approach. Probit results reveal that the probability to choose winter maize are influenced positively …
Environmental constraints and profitability relationships in agriculture
This article attempts to measure the influence of environmental constraints on profitability and resource use in agriculture by utilizing survey data of 293 wheat farmers from three regions of Bangladesh. Analysis is based on a profit function, where the selected variables representing environmental constraints were incorporated as additional fixed factors. Results revealed that environmental constraints have a significant influence on both profi…
Six decades of agricultural land use change in Bangladesh
This paper provides a detailed analysis of agricultural land use change in Bangladesh over a 59-year period (1948–2006) and examines how these have impacted crop diversity, productivity, food availability and the environment. The key findings of the analysis are: first, land use intensity has increased significantly over this period, mainly from the widespread adoption of a rice-based Green Revolution technology package beginning in the early 196…
Determinants of agricultural land rental market transactions in Bangladesh
Profits, supply and HYV adoption in Bangladesh
The adoption of HYVs (High Yielding Varieties), for increased farm profitability, and the accelerated supply of cereals are important objectives for Bangladesh agriculture. In this paper, we have investigated the manner in which price and non-price factor affect these three criteria, based upon a model of rational variety choice. The model is empirically implemented using translog profit functions and a switching regression framework, and applied…

Learning from experience in urban programming
The article offers a reflective analysis of various problems encountered and lessons learned in implementing a programme to improve the livelihood security of the urban poor in secondary cities of Bangladesh. The study is based on the author's involvement as an external action-research partner, and a review of relevant secondary literature. A number of key lessons emerge for the success of project operations. These are the need for (1) a clear un…

Technological Change and Women’s Participation in Crop Production in Bangladesh
There is a dearth of information on the employment effects of modern agricultural technology on rural women in Bangladesh. The present study1 looks at women’s participation in crop production activities, examines their influence in the diffusion of modern technology and their participation in the hired labor market. Data for this study comes from two intensive surveys conducted in the crop years 1989 and 1996 in three agro-ecological regions of B…
