  • Government rainwater harvesting initiative in northern Ghana and its impacts on local livelihoods and work-life balance

Ama Fremah Koranteng, Peter Bilson Obour et al.•ARTICLE•Local Environment•2024

The “One Village One Dam (1V1D)” is a rainwater harvesting technology initiated by the Government of Ghana in 2017 to make water available all year round for animal watering, irrigation and domestic use in dryland areas in northern Ghana. However, scepticism about the potential of the 1V1D to stave off water stress and its associated impact on local livelihood activities is still prevalent in the country. This case study of Savelugu Municipality …

  • Long‐Term Effects of Arable and Tree Cropping Systems on Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Dynamics in a Tropical Agroecological Transition Zone

Open Access•Peter Bilson Obour, Ohene Asa Bosompem et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2024

Continuous cropping can affect soil carbon and nitrogen stocks and litter decomposition, but research on smallholder farms in Africa is limited. This study, conducted from 2020 to 2023 in Ghana's forest‐savanna transition zone, examined four cropping systems: continuous maize monocrop (M), maize rotated with legumes (ML), young cashew intercropped with maize or legumes (YCM/L), and mature cashew (MC). The objective was to assess the long‐term imp…

  • Effects of socio-cultural norms on smallholder adaptation to climate change in Nkoranza South municipality, Ghana

Alexander Nii Adjei Sowah, Kwesi Owusu et al.•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2021•Referências: 23

Socio-cultural norms can potentially enhance the adaptive capacities of some groups while constraining the capacities of others. Using household surveys, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews in four communities in the Nkoranza South municipality, Ghana, this article examines how socio-cultural norms influence the climate change adaptation of smallholder farmers. While socio-cultural norms fostered indigenes’ access to farmlands a…

  • Mainstreaming climate change into local governance

    Justice Issah Musah-Surugu, Kwesi Owusu et al.•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2018•Citada por: 2•Referências: 34

Through an interpretive research paradigm, we investigated the extent to which six local governments across three administrative regions of Ghana have complied with mandated climate change financing and budgeting guidelines. Five interesting findings emerged. First, there is enormous evidence of climate change budgeting compliance across all six local governments despite weak compliance incentives. Second, local governments that are most vulnerab…

  • Downstream effects of dams on livelihoods of river-dependent communities

Kwesi Owusu, Kwadwo Owusu et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•2017•Citada por: 4•Referências: 25

Construction of dams affects the livelihoods of the population living along the dammed river. There is a need for more studies to guide dam development policies and management to safeguard the livelihoods of local river users. This paper examines the effects of dams on the socio-economic livelihoods of downstream communities by drawing on the Kpong Dam in Ghana constructed from 1979 to 1982 with the goal of supplying energy and for irrigation pur…
