Gendered drivers of post-adoption abandonment of rain-fed upland “New Rice for Africa” (Nerica) rice varieties in central Benin
This study investigated the post-adoption outcomes of upland “New Rice for Africa” (NERICA) rice dissemination in central Benin. Using a 2016 follow-up survey of 296 smallholders, it traces cultivation patterns after national promotion programs (2006–2010). Although 82 per cent of surveyed farmers cultivated rice in 2011, by 2015, only 28 per cent continued and fewer than 5 per cent retained NERICA. Farmers cited low rainfall, poor soil fertility…

Social capital and use of assisted reproductive technology in young couples
Although we cannot infer causal relationships, the findings suggest that improving financial access and enhancing social capital may increase access to ART. Further research, particularly multilevel analysis using individual data, is required to confirm these findings
Moving toward rice self-sufficiency in sub-Saharan Africa by 2030
The Coalition for African Rice Development (CARD) was initiated as a policy framework with the aim of doubling rice production in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) over the period from 2008 to 2018. This paper assesses the contribution of the CARD policy to rice production and forecasts the local rice supply and demand to provide a better understanding of the policies needed to attain rice self-sufficiency by 2030. A combination of the autoregressive inte…
Can sub-Saharan Africa feed itself?
Significance The question whether sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) can be self-sufficient in cereals by 2050 is of global relevance. Currently, SSA is amongst the (sub)continents with the largest gap between cereal consumption and production, whereas its projected tripling demand between 2010 and 2050 is much greater than in other continents. We show that nearly complete closure of the gap between current farm yields and yield potential is needed to main…
