  • Refractive error among school-aged children in Bhutan

Open Access•Indra Prasad Sharma, Kovin Naidoo et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

This study aimed to determine the prevalence, demographic distribution, and predictors of refractive error (RE) among school children in Bhutan using secondary data from the 2019 Bhutan School Sight Survey (BSSS). It also sought to compare these population-level findings with standardized estimates from the Refractive Error Study in Children (RESC). Secondary data from 586 schools, comprising 164,365 school-enrolled children aged 5–18 years (94.3…

  • Effective refractive error coverage and quality gaps in Bhutan

Open Access•Indra Prasad Sharma, Kovin Naidoo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Uncorrected refractive errors (URE) and presbyopia are leading causes of visual impairment (VI) globally. Bhutan currently lacks population-based data on adult refractive error, hindering efforts to meet WHO’s 2030 targets for effective refractive error coverage (eREC). To estimate the prevalence of URE, presbyopia, spectacle use, and eREC among individuals aged 18 to 49 years in Bhutan. A population-based cross-sectional survey using the Rapid A…

  • Situation analysis on the integration of refractive error services provided by optometrists into the national health services in Kenya

Open Access•Shadrack Muma, Kovin Naidoo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The Kenyan NHS should advocate for primary care and reorient the current hospital-based delivery approach for refractive error services. This is attributed to the fact that provision of refractive error services at primary care remains effective and efficient and could translate to early detection of other ocular conditions. The existing human resources in the eye health ecosystem in Kenya should maximize their efforts towards addressing uncorrec…

  • Demographic factors associated with myopia knowledge, attitude and preventive practices among adults in Ghana

Open Access•Uchechukwu L Osuagwu, Stephen Ocansey et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Ghanaian participants had adequate knowledge of myopia but showed poor attitude and low preventive practices, which varied significantly between regions and were modified by socio-demographic factors. Further research into how education can be used to stimulate Ghanaians' engagement in preventive practices is needed

  • The WHO-ITU MyopiaEd Programme

Open Access•Stuart Keel, Pirindha Govender-Poonsamy et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the World Health Organization - International Telecommunication Union MyopiaEd programme - a digital message programme targeting education on myopia and its prevention. The development of the MyopiaEd programme included 4 key steps: (1) Conceptualization and consultation with experts in the field of myopia, mHealth and health behavior change; (2) Creation of SMS message libraries and progra…

  • A School Eye Health Rapid Assessment (Sehra) planning tool

Open Access•Priya Morjaria, Jessica Massie et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

The SEHRA survey module 'the magnitude and nature of local needs in school children' can be applied in any context. In certain circumstances, the confidence in the survey data will be reduced

  • Willingness to pay for improved vision in Mozambique

Stephen Thompson, Kovin Naidoo et al.•ARTICLE•Development Southern Africa•2021

The burden of vision impairment due to uncorrected refractive error (needing spectacles) in Mozambique is known to be significant. To improve the planning and provision of eye health services, a better understanding of how vision is valued by patients is needed. The willingness to pay (WTP) for improved vision through correcting refractive error was investigated in Nampula, Mozambique, using stated choice and bidding game methodologies. The mean …

  • Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Eye Health among Public Sector Eye Health Workers in South Africa

Open Access•Zamadonda Nokuthula Xulu-Kasaba, Khathutshelo Percy Mashige et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

In South Africa, primary eye care is largely challenged in its organisational structure, availability of human and other resources, and clinical competency. These do meet the standard required by the National Department of Health. This study seeks to assess the levels of knowledge, attitudes, and practices on eye health amongst Human Resources for eye health (HReH) and their managers, as no study has assessed this previously. A cross-sectional st…

  • Addressing avoidable vision impairment in Mozambique and the Africa region

Stephen Thompson, Kovin Naidoo et al.•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2019•Referências: 13

The Mozambique Eyecare Project was an international partnership to implement and research eye health education in Mozambique and the Africa region. An optometry degree was developed at Universidade Lúrio, Mozambique. In addition, existing eye health workers were upskilled with training. Researchers from various disciplines evaluated the project and its potential for impact on eye health in the region. The body of evidence generated from the resea…

  • Measuring progress from 1990 to 2017 and projecting attainment to 2030 of the health-related Sustainable Development Goals for 195 countries and territories

Open Access•R Lozano, Nancy Fullman et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2018

BACKGROUND: Efforts to establish the 2015 baseline and monitor early implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight both great potential for and threats to improving health by 2030. To fully deliver on the SDG aim of "leaving no one behind", it is increasingly important to examine the health-related SDGs beyond national-level estimates. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2…

  • Magnitude, temporal trends, and projections of the global prevalence of blindness and distance and near vision impairment

    Open Access•Rupert R A Bourne, Seth R Flaxman et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet Global Health•2017

  • Global Prevalence of Myopia and High Myopia and Temporal Trends from 2000 through 2050

    Open Access•Brien A Holden, Timothy R Fricke et al.•ARTICLE•Ophthalmology•2016

PURPOSE: Myopia is a common cause of vision loss, with uncorrected myopia the leading cause of distance vision impairment globally. Individual studies show variations in the prevalence of myopia and high myopia between regions and ethnic groups, and there continues to be uncertainty regarding increasing prevalence of myopia. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence …

  • The prevalence of self-reported vision difficulty in economically disadvantaged regions of South Africa

Open Access•Kovin Naidoo, Kovin S Naidoo et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Disability•2015

The evidence from this study suggests associations between socio-economic factors and vision difficulties that have a two-fold relationship (some factors such as education, and access to eye health services are associated with vision difficulty whilst vision difficulty may trap people in their current poverty or deepen their poverty status). The results are thus indicative of the need for further research in South Africa

  • Years lived with disability (YLDs) for 1160 sequelae of 289 diseases and injuries 1990–2010

    Open Access•Theo Vos, Abraham D Flaxman et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2012

  • Disability-adjusted life years (Dalys) for 291 diseases and injuries in 21 regions, 1990–2010

    Open Access•Christopher J L Murray, Theo Vos et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2012
