  • Agent-Neutral Reasons and Contractualist Moral Theory

    Open Access•Robert H Myers•ARTICLE•Philosophy•2025

Back in 1982, when I started studying with Samuel Scheffler, a major subject of debate was whether – and, if so, exactly why and how – the existence of agent-relative reasons for action justifies making fundamental changes to consequentialist moral theory. How dramatically the tables have turned in the years since! Now the question tends to be whether – and, if so, exactly why and how – agent-neutral reasons for action can have a significant role…

  • Replies to Kirk Ludwig and Paul Hurley

    Open Access•Robert H Myers•ARTICLE•Dialogue•2020•Referências: 16

In response to Paul Hurley, I argue that Donald Davidson's triangulation argument can be applied to normative beliefs only if such beliefs are answerable to properties that are at once normative and causal. The argument thus commits Davidson to a non-reductive and strikingly non-revisionary form of naturalism. In response to Kirk Ludwig, I argue that Davidson had good reason to abandon Humean accounts of pro-attitudes because he had good reason t…

  • Donald Davidson's Triangulation Argument

    Robert H Myers, Claudine Verheggen•BOOK•Donald Davidson's Triangulation…•2016

According to many commentators, Davidson’s earlier work on philosophy of action and truth-theoretic semantics is the basis for his reputation, and his later forays into broader metaphysical and epistemological issues, and eventually into what became known as the triangulation argument, are much less successful. This book by two of his former students aims to change that perception. In Part One, Verheggen begins by providing an explanation and def…

  • Cooperating to Promote the Good

    Open Access•Robert H Myers•ARTICLE•Analyse & Kritik•2011

I argue that the aim of moral activity is to cooperate with others in the promotion of value, where the concept of cooperation denotes not a formal ideal to be given content through reasoning but a substantive way of engaging with others. I show how this approach to ethical theory can provide better accounts of many of our moral convictions than consequentialist or contractualists approaches can, and defend it against the objection that, by downp…

  • Reply to Anton Leist. Keeping Constructivism in Its Place

    Open Access•Robert H Myers•ARTICLE•Analyse & Kritik•2011

Leist worries that by tying the ideal of cooperation to the aim of promoting the good I exhibit a bias towards consequentialism, and that this in turn leads me to downsize the role to be played by the ideal of cooperation within moral theory. I maintain that no bias is exhibited towards consequentialism but acknowledge that realism is being favoured over constructivism. I further argue that the role assigned to the ideal of cooperation is as larg…

  • Self-Governance and Cooperation

    Liam Murphy, Robert H Myers•ARTICLE•The Philosophical Review•2001

Introduction: Two Problems in Moral Philosophy 1. Misgivings about Consequentialism and Contractualism 2. Cooperating to Promote the Good 3. Initial Counter-Arguments Supporting Value Monism 4. Self-Governance and Value Dualism Conclusion: Implications for the Question of Morality's Authority References Index

  • The Inescapability of Moral Reasons

    Robert H Myers•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Phenomenological…•1999•Referências: 1

According to Thomas Nagel, morality's authority is determined by the extent to which its way of balancing agent-neutral and agent-relative values resembles reason's. He himself would like to think that the resemblance is close enough to ensure that it will always be reasonable to act as morality demands. But his attempts to establish this never really get off the ground, in large part because he never makes it very clear how these two perspective…
