  • Leibnizian Materialism

    Open Access•Graeme Hunter, Graeme K Hunter•ARTICLE•Dialogue•2010•Referências: 5

In this paper, I argue a position that has almost never been held: that Leibniz was a materialist. At the conclusion of my article, I consider whether the difficulty of reconciling Leibniz’s materialism with other texts where he appears to be an idealist is best explained by Glenn Hartz’s idea of “theory pluralism,” concluding that there is instead a Leibnizian idea of “theory reconciliation” which does a better job

  • Descartes' apology

    Open Access•Graeme Hunter, Graeme K Hunter•ARTICLE•Studies in Religion/Sciences…•1998

The dedicatory letter of Descartes' Meditations has suffered from almost total scholarly neglect. While accepting that the letter's contribution to our knowledge of Cartesian philosophy is slender, I argue that there is still much of historical importance to be learned from its depiction of the religious situation of Descartes' time, which was a main motivation for Descartes to write the Meditations

  • Liberalism, Kant, Pox

    Open Access•Graeme Hunter, Graeme K Hunter•ARTICLE•Dialogue•1988

A paper which succeeds in being erudite, yet lively, and which tells an amusing tale without digressing from its theme, deserves great admiration. Such is Professor George's discussion of Kant and liberalism. He first points out briefly that in fact Kant exercised small influence on liberal thought in the nineteenth century. The bulk of his paper is devoted to the question of whether Kant was a liberal at all and to justifying his unconventional …

  • The Logic of Fiction and the ‘Sayso’ Semantics

    Open Access•Graeme Hunter, Graeme K Hunter•ARTICLE•Dialogue•1978

It would no doubt conform to most people's unschooled intuition to call 1. Hamlet was a Danish prince. true, and 2. Hamlet was a Spanish peasant. false. Yet most philosophers who have considered the question have given us reason to believe that our intuitions could lead us in such cases into (at worst) contradiction or (at best) deviant logic
