Canadian beach cohort study
Initial implementation of the study at two Toronto, Ontario, beaches in 2023 confirmed that recruitment is feasible and that a high completion rate (80%) can be achieved for the follow-up survey. While recall bias could be a concern for the self-reported RWI outcomes, we will examine the impact of this bias in a negative control analysis. Study findings will inform future recreational water quality guidelines, policies, and risk communication str…
Region-Specific Associations between Environmental Factors and Escherichia coli in Freshwater Beaches in Toronto and Niagara Region, Canada
Poor freshwater beach quality, measured by Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) levels, poses a risk of recreational water illness. This study linked environmental data to E. coli geometric means collected at 18 beaches in Toronto (2008-2019) and the Niagara Region (2011-2019) to examine the environmental predictors of E. coli . We developed region-specific models using mixed effects models to examine E. coli as a continuous variable and recommended thre…
Redefining poverty
This article presents the first measurement of multidimensional child poverty at the regional level in East Asia and the Pacific and is based on child poverty studies in seven countries in the region: Cambodia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Philippines, Thailand, Vanuatu and Viet Nam. It examines the prevalence of child poverty, as per the Bristol deprivation approach, in the seven countries, as well as the extent of various types of disparities within thes…

How governments respond is vital to e…

Effects of the Crises on Child Nutrition and Health in East Asia and the Pacific
Experiences of the 1997 financial crisis in East Asia provide strong evidence that there are serious risks that the current food, fuel, economic and financial crisis will affect child health and nutrition in the region. Using information available on the 1997 crisis, this paper evaluates its effects on nutrition status, reportable diseases, immunization status and child mortality. These results are used to model plausible estimates of the potenti…

An Examination of the 1990-91 Famine in Sudan
Shortly before and during the harvest of 1990, a series of warnings were issued by concerned international and UN agencies that Sudan would experience a very poor harvest followed by an acute food shortage over the period 1990-91. The 1990 harvest was estimated to be similar to that obtained in 1984. After the very poor harvest in 1984, Sudan experienced a major famine during which deaths may have numbered in the hundreds of thousands. There were…

An economic evaluation of ‘Health for All’
The World Health Organization's 'Global Strategy' is an ambitious vision, but to achieve its goals it must first be implemented. Implementation will require careful and detailed planning. This paper evaluates the possibilities of transforming the Global Strategy from a laudable policy initiative into an actual 'Plan for Health', from the point of view of a health economist. This economic evaluation assesses the probable costs of implementing vari…
