Learning outcomes and evaluation metrics for training researchers to engage in science policy
Making research evidence accessible and relevant to policymakers is one way that the scientific enterprise confers direct societal benefits. With global norms increasingly promoting these types of broader impacts, new initiatives to do so, including training researchers to engage in policy, have flourished. But what should this training entail, and how would we know whether it has been effective? A review of academic and professional literature i…
Training researchers to engage in policy in the United States
Building additional programmatic capacity - through shared learning and partnerships - could lend support to this emerging trend in science policy with implications for US research and governance
U.S. preservation nonprofits in the 2010s
Purpose We assess changes that have taken place in organizational structure, governance structure and professional approach to U.S. nonprofit preservation from 2010 to 2020. This research contributes to our understanding of pressures shaping organizational capacity of cultural and historic preservation nonprofits in the U.S., focusing on changes in ecological influences at the national and regional level through the lenses of institutional theory…

Perspectives on social justice among US historic preservation practitioners
This paper examines practitioner perspectives on responsibilities and organisational actions and towards social justice issues in the field among 75 historic preservation practitioners from across the United States. Respondents are representatives of organisations that are formerly partners of the National Trust for Historic Preservation or are affiliated with the National Preservation Partners Network as of 2020. A survey of historic preservatio…
Pathways of Representation in Network Governance
Governance systems reconcile diverse interests to enable collective decision-making and action. Questions related to representation in the governance of networks are addressed in the literature; underexplored is the empirical variation in governance arrangements and pathways of representation. Complex, multi-jurisdictional disasters provide a robust theoretical and empirical context in which to investigate network governance pathways due to the t…
Studying Networks in Complex Problem Domains
The application of network perspectives and methods to study complex problem and policy domains has proliferated in the public management literature. Network metrics are highly sensitive to boundary decisions as findings are a direct reflection of who and what was considered to be part of the network. The more complex the problem domain, the messier the network and the more challenging it is for researchers to determine network boundaries. Lauman…
The Structure of Effective Governance of Disaster Response Networks
There is significant debate about the appropriate governance structure in a disaster response. Complex disasters exhibit both networked and hierarchical characteristics. One challenge in the field of disaster management is how to structure a response that reconciles the need for centralized coordination among varied responders while retaining flexibility to mutually adjust operations to quickly changing conditions. A key question with both practi…
Patterns of preference and practice
The roles of bridging actors in emergency response networks can be important to disaster response outcomes. This paper is based on an evaluation of wildfire preparedness and response networks in 21 large‐scale wildfire events in the wildland—urban interface near national forests in the American Northwest. The study investigated how key individuals in responder networks anticipated seeking out specific people in perceived bridging roles prior to t…
An Exploratory Study of Public Service Motivation and the Institutional-Occupational Model of the Military
This article empirically connects Moskos' Institutional-Occupational model to the large body of cross-nationally validated research on public service motivation (PSM). We find that in our sample, the PSM construct is positively correlated with institutional motivations that reflect Moskos' insights. We also find evidence that the four dimensions of PSM (Attraction to Public Participation, Commitment to Public Values, Self-sacrifice, and Compassio…
