The sociological literature on elite private schooling is frequently informed by Bourdieu’s signature concepts of cultural, social and symbolic capital. But radio waves were appearing that carried fragments of the future: weekend broadcasts of a new kind of music - Jungle - were being illegally beamed across the city from the rooftops of tower blocks, appropriating them as the locus of an alternative cultural infrastructure. This essay develops Titley’s discussion of racism and the media through a concerted engagement with popular culture, and specifically with sound and YouTube video culture. Expanding Titley’s notion of “debatability”, it asks what alternatives to racism are held in popular culture, and in a time of nationalist, racist and authoritarian assertion, why the identification of such alternatives might matter for a leftist anti-racist project
Private schools and tax advantage in England and Wales — the longue duree
England and Wales have a sizeable fee-paying private school sector including well- resourced elite schools conferring considerable advantage on their students. The majority have charitable status, yielding substantial tax breaks. This significant source of funding for the sector has attracted comparatively little attention from educational researchers. Writing from Britain in the month of May 2020, this essay draws the multiple and conflicting alignments of the Covid-19 moment into conjunctural relief.
