Association between migration and cardiovascular health in Mexicans
BACKGROUND: Evolving migration patterns between the USA and Mexico may alter the traditional health advantages associated with Mexican immigrants in the USA. This study examines the relationship between migration status and health, comparing Mexican-origin individuals residing in the USA and Mexico. METHODS: We conducted a binational, population-based, cross-sectional analysis using the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (2008-2011)…
Racism, sociopolitical context, and emotional well-being in immigrant Latina mothers and their preschool-aged children
Community-based support programs should expand into areas where families face high levels of racism stress and scarce community support. During the vulnerable postmigration period, mutually opposing forces of community support and racism may have far-reaching impacts across immigrant generations and broader society. We Can't Say This Won't Happen to Me
In recent years, discrimination toward Hispanic/Latino Americans has escalated, threatening the health of Hispanic/Latino families and children. Previous research in African American families demonstrates the importance of parent-child communication in interrupting the pathway between childhood discrimination and poor health outcomes, but parent-child communication regarding discrimination has not been well-studied in Hispanic/Latino families. Th…
Diet quality and dental caries in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos
An association between diet quality and dental caries was restricted to foreign-born Latinix and was not limited to the adverse impact of sugar-sweetened drinks
Relationship between area mortgage foreclosures, homeownership, and cardiovascular disease risk factors
Among US Hispanic/Latinos in urban cities, area foreclosure and homeownership have implications for risk of cardiovascular disease
Measurement properties of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D 10)
The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) is a widely used self-report measure of depression symptomatology. This study evaluated the reliability, validity, and measurement invariance of the CES-D 10 in a diverse cohort of Hispanics/Latinos from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL). The sample consisted of 16,415 Hispanic/Latino adults recruited from 4 field centers (Miami, FL; San Diego, CA; Bronx, …
Levels of Participants Satisfaction with Initial Contact and Examination Visit
Results demonstrate that culturally and linguistically trained staff and the use of the study's informed consent DVD were effective in explaining study procedures and positively influenced decisions to participate in the HCHS/SOL study. These results can inform recruitment and enrollment strategies for future participation of minority groups into longitudinal cohort studies
Stress and Coping
Previous research has linked stress to adverse mental health outcomes among Latino adolescents living in the United States. The mechanism through which this process operates continues to be explored, especially in regions of the country where Latin American immigrants and their children have only recently begun to migrate. Our study aimed to contextualize the processes of stress and coping among Latino adolescents growing up in an emerging Latino…
Associations of Chronic Stress Burden, Perceived Stress, and Traumatic Stress With Cardiovascular Disease Prevalence and Risk Factors in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos Sociocultu…
OBJECTIVE: The current study examined multiple stress indicators (chronic, perceived, traumatic) in relation to prevalent coronary heart disease, stroke, and major cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors (i.e., diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and current smoking) in the multisite Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos Sociocultural Ancillary Study (2010-2011). METHODS: Participants were 5313 men and women 18 to 74 years old, rep…
Prevalence of Major Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Cardiovascular Diseases Among Hispanic/Latino Individuals of Diverse Backgrounds in the United States
CONTEXT: Major cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are leading causes of mortality among US Hispanic and Latino individuals. Comprehensive data are limited regarding the prevalence of CVD risk factors in this population and relations of these traits to socioeconomic status (SES) and acculturation. OBJECTIVES: To describe prevalence of major CVD risk factors and CVD (coronary heart disease [CHD] and stroke) among US Hispanic/Latino individuals of diffe…
