International climate and biodiversity funding
The climate and land use change nexus
Climate change and land use change are two global and interacting forces of change that have wide‐reaching effects on socio‐ecological systems. Despite their interconnectedness, the two are mostly considered separately in investment programs. Therefore, without an integrated systemic approach that considers these interactions, we will fail to achieve the ambitions to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals. By integrating the Driver‐Pressure…
The impact of deforestation on rainfall in Africa
Forests play an important role in maintaining rainfall patterns worldwide by recycling water back to the atmosphere through evapotranspiration. We present a novel spatiotemporal data-driven model and assessment of the impacts of various deforestation scenarios on rainfall patterns in sub-Saharan Africa, where rainfed agriculture is the main source of income and provides food for a large part of the population. Our model is based on the convolutio…
The institutional fit of peatland governance in Indonesia
Land-use trade-offs in the Kapuas peat forest, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia
Hydrological and economic effects of oil palm cultivation in Indonesian peatlands
Sumarga, E., L. Hein, A. Hooijer, and R. Vernimmen. 2016. Hydrological and economic effects of oil palm cultivation in Indonesian peatlands. Ecology and Society 21(2):52.http://dx.doi.org/10.5751/ES-08490-210252
Monetary accounting of ecosystem services
Farm diversity, resource use efficiency and sustainable land management in the western highlands of Kenya
Fostering technological transition to sustainable land management through stakeholder collaboration in the western highlands of Kenya
Towards a consistent approach for ecosystem accounting
Global estimates of the value of ecosystems and their services in monetary units
This paper gives an overview of the value of ecosystem services of 10 main biomes expressed in monetary units. In total, over 320 publications were screened covering over 300 case study locations. Approximately 1350 value estimates were coded and stored in a searchable Ecosystem Service Value Database (ESVD). A selection of 665 value estimates was used for the analysis. Acknowledging the uncertainties and contextual nature of any valuation, the a…
The Impact of First-Generation Biofuels on the Depletion of the Global Phosphorus Reserve
Economic Benefits Generated by Protected Areas
Eliciting the economic benefits provided by protected areas is important in order to ensure that they are properly considered in policy and decision making. There are relatively few studies that provide a comprehensive overview of the economic benefits provided by European forest ecosystems, in spite of the large share of forests in the protected area system in most countries. An economic valuation of the ecosystem services supplied by the Hoge V…
Evaluating the impact of regional development policies on future landscape services
The economic value of coffee (Coffea arabica) genetic resources
Spatial scales, stakeholders and the valuation of ecosystem services
Cost-efficient eutrophication control in a shallow lake ecosystem subject to two steady states
Farm diversity, resource use efficiency and sustainable land management in the western highlands of Kenya
