  • Gender inequality in global water security

    Open Access•Kaoru Kakinuma, Yoshihide Wada•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Ensuring universal and equitable access to water and sanitation for all by 2030 (United Nations Agenda 2030, Sustainable Development Goal or SDG 6) is one of the most important goals for the world. 785 million people do not still have access to basic drinking water services. This burden disproportionately affects women, who are often responsible for collecting water from distant sources in regions with limited or no water supply systems. Understa…

  • Modeling a pastoral social–ecological system and its application to climate risk assessment of traditional livelihoods

    Open Access•Nao Takashina, Kaoru Kakinuma•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2024•Referências: 10

  • Economic inequality expanded after an extreme climate event

    Open Access•Kaoru Kakinuma, Kohei Tamura et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 7

The importance of ending poverty and reducing economic inequality has been explicitly recognized globally. Climate extremes are a critical global risk and can lead to economic damages, but empirical evidence of their effects on economic inequality is limited. Here, we focus on Mongolian pastoralism, which has a coupled socio-ecological system, to examine the trend of economic inequality among herders following a climate extreme event. Mongolia ex…

  • The development of internal migration flow patterns in Japan

Open Access•Kaoru Kakinuma, Guy Abel•ARTICLE•Regional Studies Regional Science•2022•Citada por: 2

Population decline is expected to continue to be a prominent feature of Japanese demography in future decades. Internal migration plays a significant role in dictating the intensity of population decline at the regional level. In this paper we visualize inter-prefecture internal migration flows between the eight regions of Japan in 2020 using a chord diagram to show the relative scales of the origin–destination migration flows between each region…

  • Flood-induced population displacements in the world

Open Access•Kaoru Kakinuma, Michael J Puma et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Strengthening the resilience of societies to extreme weather events is an urgent and critical priority around the world. Extreme weather often causes population displacement that compromises human security. Environment-induced displacement is multifaceted because climate extremes, population, and socio-economic conditions, among other factors, converge to influence individuals’ decisions to move. When large-scale, catastrophic floods occur, peopl…

  • Association between Cardiovascular Mortality and Economic Development

Open Access•Emerson Augusto Baptista, Kaoru Kakinuma et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

In this paper, we use a bivariate choropleth map to investigate the relationship between mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD) and gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, by sex, in Japanese prefectures from 1996 to 2015. The overall results show a decline in age-standardized CVD mortality rates in all prefectures, for both men and women, and suggest that GDP per capita has varied over the period. We also observed that the relationship bet…

  • Are water markets globally applicable

Open Access•Takahiro Endo, Kaoru Kakinuma et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

Water scarcity is a global concern that necessitates a global perspective, but it is also the product of multiple regional issues that require regional solutions. Water markets constitute a regionally applicable non-structural measure to counter water scarcity that has received the attention of academics and policy-makers, but there is no global view on their applicability. We present the global distribution of potential nations and states where …

  • A developing food crisis and potential refugee movements

    Open Access•Michael J Puma, So Young Chon et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Sustainability•2018•Referências: 3

  • Coupled social and ecological dynamics of herders in Mongolian rangelands

Open Access•Joung Hun Lee, Kaoru Kakinuma et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2015

  • How Pastoralists in Mongolia Perceive Vegetation Changes Caused by Grazing

Open Access•Kaoru Kakinuma, Takahiro Ozaki et al.•ARTICLE•Nomadic Peoples•2009•Citada por: 2

It is widely recognized that changes in livestock grazing in Mongolia after the early 1990s has increased concerns regarding land management and a need for better management strategies. Traditional knowledge and experiences of the Mongolian pastoralists should be used for such strategies. If pastoralists recognize the seriousness of 'overgrazing' or signs of overgrazing, management can be guided to use this traditional ecological knowledge to dev…
