On the Provenance of the Holy Shroud of Lirey/Turin
This paper does not discuss the authenticity or antiquity of the Holy Shroud. It addresses the problem of its historical appearance in the 1350s and its antecedents, if any, before that date. It is suggested that the object owed its creation (if a replica) or its transmission into Europe (if genuinely a relic) to the efforts of members of the Franciscan order. The early fourteenth century saw the resistance of the Franciscans to the conduct of the ecclesiastical Inquisition in the wake of the Cathar heresy, the crisis and destruction of the Spiritual Franciscan movement and the struggle to maintain the unity of France under Philip the Fair. The Royal sergeants of medieval France have been little studied up to now. Taking advantage of exceptional documentation on the sergeants of Languedoc, this article seeks to fill in part of this gap. The results raise questions about some commonly held ideas concerning the sergeants : notably relating to their alleged abuses, their excessive numbers and their recruitment in the lowest classes of society
