Response regarding Colombian regulation of biotherapeutic products
Anemia and Child Education
Welfare programs in Colombia have focused on both reducing malnutrition and hunger and increasing school attendance. But there is not much evidence on the hypothesized relationship between nutrition status and schooling outcomes. Using the National Survey of Nutritional Status in Colombia — 2005 (ENSIN) and the Demographic and Health Survey — 2005 (DHS), this paper estimates the impact of nutrition on schooling outcomes. The results suggest that …
Discrimination in Latin America
This book presents a set of studies on contemporary discrimination in Latin America that takes advantage of these new tools by focusing on social interactions that range from cooperation, group formation, and the impact of migration in poor families to specific markets such as housing and labor. The techniques applied include traditional regression analysis, experimental approaches, and audit studies, as well as structural methods. This wide rang…
Endogenous institutions the importance of history
This paper examines the determinants of teacher and course evaluations at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. The paper explores how teacher and course characteristics affect evaluation results. Grades obtained by students directly and positively affect teacher evaluations. Class size negatively affects the results of the evaluations. Finally whether teachers are full or part-time as well as years of experience of teachers have a ne…
Intereses colombianos en el TLC
Visa USA
This paper attempts to answer three questions about Colombian emigrants living in the United States: (i) how many are they? and when did they arrive?, (ii) what are their socioeconomic characteristics? and how do they compare to those of Colombian residents?, and (iii) how large are the differences in earned incomes between Colombian immigrants and Colombian residents? The results show, first, that the Colombian population in the United States is…
Who's In and Who's Out
Social exclusion is closely linked with many economic problems in Latin America, as it prevents people from reaching their full productive potential -in turn constraining growth and revenues- and makes them more likely to incur public health and social service costs. Who's In and Who's Out explores various forms of social exclusion, including residential segregation in Bolivian cities, exclusion from health care in Brazil, barriers to legal statu…
Parental actions and sibling inequality
Is Geography Destiny? Lessons from Latin America
For decades, the prevailing sentiment was that, since geography is unchangeable, there is no reason why public policies should take it into account. In fact, charges that geographic interpretations of development were deterministic, or even racist, made the subject a virtual taboo in academic and policymaking circles alike. "Is Geography Destiny?" challenges that premise and joins a growing body of literature studying the links between geography …
Patterns of crime victimization in Latin American cities
Household Responses to Adverse Income Shocks in Latin America
This paper uses a new data set to study household responses to adverse income shocks in seven Latin American countries. The results show (i) that households respond to income shocks mainly by increasing their labor force participation, selling assets, and cutting on human capital investments, (ii) that poor households are most likely to be affected by adverse income shocks, and (iii) that lower-middle class households are more likely to cut back …
School-Based Peer Effects and Juvenile Behavior
We use a sample of tenth-graders to test for peer-group influences on the propensity to engage in five activities: drug use, alcohol drinking, cigarette smoking, church going, and the likelihood of dropping out of high school. We find strong evidence of peer-group effects at the school level for all activities. Tests for bias due to endogenous school choice yield mixed results. We find evidence of endogeneity bias for two of the five activities a…
Sibling Correlations and Intergenerational Mobility in Latin America
Increasing returns and the evolution of violent crime
Data and Code for Covid-19 spread, detection, and dynamics in a megacity in Latin America
We implemented a COVID-19 sentinel surveillance study with 59,770 RT-PCR tests on mostly asymptomatic individuals and combine this data with administrative records on all detected cases to capture the spread and dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bogotá from June 2020 to early March 2021. We describe various features of the pandemic that appear to be specific to a developing-country context. We find that, by March 2021, slightly more than half …
