Globalisation and national commodity cycles
Globalisation may have reduced but certainly has not eliminated differences in national commodity cycles. This article examines the case of Australia's wine industry. Over the past four decades, all annual indicators of that industry's international competitiveness have traced a steep inverted V. This paper draws on recently compiled data to first summarise such indicators and contrast them with those of other key wine‐exporting countries. It the…
Analyzing globalization through a case study of wine
This paper documents a new, unique annual database of global wine markets covering 1835–2023. The database expands enormously the opportunities for conducting studies on national and global wine production, consumption and trade from an historical and comparative perspective for the world as a whole and for most relevant countries. The combination of this basic information with other economic variables such as real GDP, population, total merchand…
Repurposing agricultural support policies for shared prosperity in rural Fiji
Notwithstanding the increasing place of tourism exports, the rural sector and its agricultural production remain important contributors to Fijiʼs economy. But their contribution is compromised by policies and institutions that distort the farm sectorʼs resource use, with too many resources employed by sugar and livestock producers at the expense of other farmers and producers of non‐farm products. Subsidies to the sugar industry could be used ins…

Grain Price Spikes and Beggar-thy-Neighbor Policy Responses
When prices spike in international grain markets, national governments often reduce the extent to which that spike affects their domestic food markets. Those actions exacerbate the price spike and international welfare transfer associated with that terms of trade change. Several recent analyses have assessed the extent to which those policies contributed to the 2006–08 international price rises but only by focusing on one commodity or by using a …
Sectoral Trends and Shocks in Australia's Economic Growth
This paper examines the extent to which sectoral trends and fluctuations in the Australian economy can be understood using international trade theory and knowledge of key policy developments. It suggests they are consistent with theory, but it also reveals several features that make Australia's economy unusual. The most striking are the facts that (i) the agricultural sector's share of GDP remained fairly constant rather than falling during 1860–…
Implications for Indonesia of Asia’s Rise in the Global Economy
This article projects Indonesia's production and trade patterns to 2020 and 2030 in the course of global economic development under various growth and policy scenarios. We support our projections of the global economy by employing the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) model and version 8.1 of the GTAP database, along with supplementary data from a range of sources. Our baseline projection assumes that trade-related policies do not change in ea…
Globalisation and Agricultural Trade
For most of the past 10,000 years, long‐distance agricultural trade has focused on crop seeds or cuttings, breeding animals, and farm production technologies, before the dramatic falls in trade costs over the past two centuries allowed the gradual addition of farm outputs in raw or processed form to long‐distance trade. That process was helped or hindered in various periods and places by governments' trade‐related policies. This paper traces the …

Growth in Densely Populated A sia
Economic growth and integration in A sia is rapidly increasing the global economic importance of the region. To the extent that this growth continues and is strongest in natural resource‐poor A sian economies, it will add to global demand for imports of primary products, to the benefit of (especially nearby) resource‐abundant countries. How will global production, consumption and trade patterns change by 2030 in the course of such economic develo…
Southern Stalemate
In 1951 African American students at the segregated R. R. Moton High School in Prince Edward County, Virginia, staged a walkout to protest the abysmal conditions prevalent in black schools in the county. As a result, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People added the students' complaint to the others that would form the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case. After the Supreme Court's historic decision, local white officials …

The Building of Economics at Adelaide 1901-2001
The Economics discipline at the University of Adelaide has a distinguished 100 year history of which the University and the State of South Australia can be proud. Very few other departments, of any discipline in Australian universities, could claim to have a majority of its lecturer appointments rising to full Professor status over a period as long as 1901 to 1995. Nor would many other university departments be able to say they have had five of t…
Trade Barrier Volatility and Agricultural Price Stabilization
Agricultural and trade policy reforms in Latin America
Farm earnings in Latin America have been depressed by pro-urban and anti–trade biases in national policies and by the agricultural support policies of richer countries. These policies have reduced economic welfare and hampered trade and growth, and may well have added to income inequality. This paper synthesizes results from a World Bank project that provides: measures of the extent to which national policies have changed farmers’ price incentive…
Australia's Economy in its International Context
This two-volume collection brings together the first 53 Joseph Fisher Lectures in economics and commerce, presented at the Adelaide University every other year since 1904. The Lectures address a wide range of Australian economic issues, in addition to some international economic issues of national significance.

Recent and Prospective Adoption of Genetically Modified Cotton
This article provides estimates of the economic impact of initial adoption of genetically modified (GM) cotton and of its potential impacts beyond the few countries where it is currently common. Use is made of the latest version of the GTAP database and model. Our results suggest that if other developing countries—especially in sub‐Saharan Africa—were to follow the lead of China, South Africa, and most recently India, adoption of GM cotton variet…

Developing-Country Agriculture and the New Trade Agenda
DEVELOPING COUNTRY AGRICULTURE AND THE NEW TRADE AGENDA Bernard Hoekman and Kym Anderson A new round of WTO negotiations on agriculture, services and perhaps some other issues is expected to be launched in late 1999. To what extent should those negotiations include socalled "new trade agenda" items aimed at ensuring that domestic regulatory policies do not discriminate against foreign suppliers? We argue in this paper that while market access neg…

Structural Changes in a Reforming World Economy
How will rapid East Asian industrialisation and international trade policy reforms affect Indonesia's economy? Taking an economy-wide perspective and drawing on projections to 2005, based on a global applied general equilibrium model (GTAP), we show the impact of Uruguay Round implementation, and explore other international influences on Indonesia's and neighbouring economies. Trade reforms likely to accompany China's (and Taiwan's) membership of…

Europe 1992 and the Western Pacific Economies
The main stimulus to completing the integration of the economies of the \n European Community under the 1992 programme has been the EC's relatively \n slow economic growth during the past two or three decades. There is also a growing body of literature by empirical \nanalysts that seeks to explain the interindustry pattern of protection \nwithin countries. China's Economic Growth, Structural Transformation and Food Trade
Since the end of the Cultural Revolution the Chinese economy has grown very rapidly. This growth has been spurred by the major economic reforms of the late 1970s and early 1980s which, among other things, liberalised domestic agricultural markets and international trade and finance, and switched the emphasis of industrial policy from heavy to light manufacturing. During the 1973-83 period China's per capita income grew at 4.5 per cent, almost tre…

The Rise and Demise of Textiles and Clothing in Economic Development
In recent decades, producers of textiles and in advanced industrial economies were the first large group of manufacturers who went into a decline as a result \nof import competition from newly industrializing economies. This occurred primarily because many \nprocesses in textile and clothing production tend to be intensive in the use of unskilled labor and \nso, as unskilled labor becomes relatively scarce in the advanced economies, comparative …
