Emotions and gendered experiences of livelihood migration
With increasingly difficult conditions for smallholder agricultural production, labor migration is an essential component of livelihoods for many rural families in the Global South. This migration is gendered and is often normalized as part of households' livelihood portfolios. Yet it also can reproduce livelihood precarity and help maintain underlying structural inequalities. The role of labor migration as a livelihood strategy therefore require…
Linkages between international migration and agrarian extractivism in Guatemala
In the Shadow of the Green Revolution
Much smallholder farming currently exists side by side with large-scale, industrial agriculture, as an outcome of the Green Revolution unfolding in uneven and dualistic terms. In Guatemala’s Pacific lowlands, state incentives fuel expansion of industrial export agriculture. Large-scale sugarcane production has come to surround rural farming communities, where small-scale farmers grow maize and sesame with little state support. Drawing on a survey…
Securing the Return
Expanded border enforcement has made unauthorised migration to the US more risky, costly, and prone to failure. Research on the material consequences of border enforcement for migrant‐sending households in Central America reveals that the economic hardships enforcement exacts on migrants at times diminishes enforcement's desired deterrent power. Heightened risks have driven up the cost of migration and pushed many to fund their trips through loan…

Can Superior Natural Amenities Create High-Quality Employment Opportunities? The Case of Nonconsumptive River Recreation in Central Idaho
Central Idaho has superior environmental amenities, as evidenced by exceptionally high-value tourism, such as guided whitewater rafting. The focus of our study concerns the attainment of high-quality jobs in a high-quality natural environment. We estimate cumulative wage rate effects unique to nonconsumptive river recreation in central Idaho for comparison with other sectors. The cumulative effects are based on a detailed survey of recreation spe…
Willingness to Pay for Non Angler Recreation at the Lower Snake River Reservoirs
This study applied the travel cost method to estimate demand for non angler recreation at the impounded Snake River in eastern Washington. Net value per person per recreation trip is estimated for the full non angler sample and separately for camping, boating, water-skiing, and swimming/picnicking. Certain recreation activities would be reduced or eliminated and new activities would be added if the dams were breached to protect endangered salmon …

The Burmese people's struggle
The Burmans, the dominant people in Burma from the 11th to the 19th century, were never able to maintain unity among themselves or with the other ethnic minorities they subjugated. Nor did the Burmans carry any tradition of political freedom with them for, as Josef Silverstein writes in Burmese Politics: The Dilemma of National Unity, the Burman kings were “thought to be semi‐divine and entitled to command the absolute obedience of their subject‐…
Spiritualizing the Political”
Gandhi's intense study of Christ and Christianity, especially in South Africa, had a major impact on his satyagraha campaigns in both South Africa and India. Although satyagraha is often considered only in its political aspect, and although several studies of his religious beliefs have been done without reference to their political implications, Gandhi himself emphasized throughout his life that he sought to spiritualize the political, to establi…

Instream flow assessment and economic valuation
Instream flow benefits for United States streams and rivers have recently been investigated by a number of resource economists. These valuation efforts differ in scope, method, and quantitative results. An assessment and review of these valuation efforts is presented. The various sources of differences in non‐market values produced by these studies are explored in some detail. The considerable difficulty of producing estimates of instream flow be…
Back-country water treatment to prevent giardiasis
This study was conducted to provide current information on the effectiveness of water treatment chemicals and filters for control of Giardia cysts in areas where treated water is not available. Four filters and seven chemical treatments were evaluated for both clear and turbid water at 10 degrees C. Three contact disinfection devices were also tested for cyst inactivation. Filters were tested with 1-liter volumes of water seeded with 3 x 10(4) cy…

Mobilizing Woman for War
Nazi Feminists
In 1933 a group of Nazi women published a book of open letters, Deutsche Frauen an Adolf Hitler (German Women to Adolf Hitler), to convince their FUhrer that the new Third Reich needed German women in positions of power.1 They were eager to demonstrate their loyalty to him and to National Socialism but they were equally willing to criticize the men's state that they felt Hitler's subordinates were forming. All seven letters are imbued with Nazi i…
