  • Variability of Fish Assemblages throughout the Holocene in Northern Chile (18–31°S)

Sandra Rebolledo, Sandra Rebolledo Canale et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2026•Referências: 102

Our study provides a synthesis and assessment of the ichthyoarchaeological record for pre-Columbian human occupations during the Holocene (ca. 12,000 BP – 1492 AD) on the coast of northern Chile (18-31°S), on the Pacific coast of South America. We focus on the variability of fish assemblages, using data obtained from publications between 1979 and 2023. We standardise and compare ichthyoarchaeological data, applying qualitative and quantitative in…

  • Comparing Micadas Gas Source, Direct Carbonate, and Standard Graphite 14 C Determinations of Biogenic Carbonate

Open Access•Jordon Bright, Chris Ebert et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•Referências: 44

Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Arizona, USA, recently installed a MIni CArbon DAting System (MICADAS) with a gas interface system (GIS) for determining the 14 C content of CO 2 gas released by the acid dissolution of biogenic carbonates. We compare 48 paired graphite, GIS, and direct carbonate 14 C determinations of individual mollusk shells and echinoid tests. GIS sample sizes ranged between 0.5 and 1.5 mg and span 0.1 to 45.1 ka BP (n …

  • Comparing Direct Carbonate and Standard Graphite 14 C Determinations of Biogenic Carbonates

Open Access•Jordon Bright, Chris Ebert et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2021•Citada por: 1•Referências: 50

The direct carbonate procedure for accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14 C) dating of submilligram samples of biogenic carbonate without graphitization is becoming widely used in a variety of studies. We compare the results of 153 paired direct carbonate and standard graphite 14 C determinations on single specimens of an assortment of biogenic carbonates. A reduced major axis regression shows a strong relationship between direct carbo…

  • Geohistorical records of the Anthropocene in Chile

Open Access•Eugenia Gayó, Eugenia M Gayo et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2019

The deep-time dynamics of coupled socio-ecological systems at different spatial scales is viewed as a key framework to understand trends and mechanisms that have led to the Anthropocene. By integrating archeological and paleoenvironmental records, we test the hypothesis that Chilean societies progressively escalated their capacity to shape national biophysical systems as socio-cultural complexity and pressures on natural resources increased over …

  • Proxy Measurements of California Mussel Valve Length

    Open Access•Michael A Glassow, Erica Sutton et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeological Practice•2016•Citada por: 3•Referências: 13

Archaeologists studying shell assemblages from prehistoric sites along the Pacific coast of North America have been interested in the influences of collecting intensity and environmental variability on California mussel (Mytilus californianus) size. To determine the variation in mussel size within a shell assemblage, researchers have developed a variety of proxies of mussel valve length based on measurements of morphological features occurring at…

  • Middle Holocene Production of Mussel Shell Fishing Artifacts on the Coast of Taltal (25° Lat South), Atacama Desert, Chile

Carola Flores, Valentina Figueroa et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2015•Citada por: 4•Referências: 10

Shell fishhooks have been found in several sites along the Pacific Coast of the Americas, but little is known about prehistoric workshops of these tools and the socio-economic context of their production and distribution. The present study provides new data about the production of mussel (Choromytilus chorus) shell fishing tools (MSFT) at Morro Colorado and Zapatero, two Middle Holocene sites on the coast of Taltal, northern Chile. The MSFT assem…
