Bridging Ethnography and Path-finding Business Opportunities
While ethnography has been integrated into the design research, new product development and corporate strategy, it has been less well integrated into path-finding for new business opportunities. We've developed a model for path-finding research that has three core parts: creating a business opportunity hypothesis from social flux, testing and validating the hypothesis, and catalyzing opportunities for the corporation. We provide a case study of h…
Culture and Markets
Current ways of addressing culture in the sociology of markets are incomplete. One approach treats culture as constitutive of markets (markets are culture), while the other treats culture as something affecting markets (markets have culture). This division corresponds to markets that are more or less “settled.” The author outlines the history and shortcomings of this duality and proposes a more dimensional approach to culture and markets that mor…
Gendering the Market
Drawing on ethnographic data collected on the trading floor of a large, Midwestern commodities exchange, I show how attention to variations in the pace of work within an overwhelmingly male-dominated workplace reveals different repertoires of gender. During periods of market activity, gender is constituted within a language of competence. Seemingly gender-neutral categories such as handling pressure, being aggressive, and being physical mask a ge…
Animated analytical and partially discretized solutions to the one-dimensional magnetic diffusion equation
An educational computer program which takes advantage of the graphical and computational capabilities of personal computers in order to help students visualize the dynamic phenomenon of magnetic diffusion is discussed. The program is capable of animating analytical and numerical steady-state solutions to a one-dimensional magnetic diffusion equation. The analytical solution is straightforwardly found from phasor analysis, while the numerical solu…
Charge Simulation and Interactive Computer Graphics in a First Course in Applied Electromagnetics
A personal computer program for analysis of electrostatic boundary value problems, based upon charge simulation, is described. The program provides students in the Electrical Engineering curriculum at Carnegie-Mellon University with color graphics representations of potential field structures for arbitrary boundary geometries, specified with a graphics tablet or input data file. Charge simulation is an attractive numerical analysis tool in an edu…
