  • Pragmatism and Methodology

    Open Access•Alex Gillespie, Vlad Glăveanu et al.•BOOK•Pragmatism and Methodology•2024•Citada por: 12•Referências: 46

Taking a pragmatist approach to methods and methodology that fosters meaningful, impactful, and ethical research, this book rises to the challenge of today's data revolution. It shows how pragmatism can turn challenges, such as the abundance and accumulation of big qualitative data, into opportunities. The authors summarize the pragmatist approach to different aspects of research, from epistemology, theory, and questions to ethics, as well as dat…

  • Causal and Corrective Organisational Culture

Open Access•E Julie Hald, Alex Gillespie et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Ethics•2021

Organisational culture is assumed to be a key factor in large-scale and avoidable institutional failures (e.g. accidents, corruption). Whilst models such as “ethical culture” and “safety culture” have been used to explain such failures, minimal research has investigated their ability to do so, and a single and unified model of the role of culture in institutional failures is lacking. To address this, we systematically identified case study articl…

  • Co-constructing intersubjectivity with artificial conversational agents

    Open Access•Kevin Corti, Alex Gillespie•ARTICLE•Computers in Human Behavior•2016•Citada por: 9•Referências: 27

This article explores whether people more frequently attempt to repair misunderstandings when speaking to an artificial conversational agent if it is represented as fully human. Interactants in dyadic conversations with an agent (the chat bot Cleverbot) spoke to either a text screen interface (agent's responses shown on a screen) or a human body interface (agent's responses vocalized by a human speech shadower via the echoborg method) and were ei…

  • A truly human interface

    Open Access•Kevin Corti, Alex Gillespie•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychology•2015•Citada por: 2•Referências: 20

We use speech shadowing to create situations wherein people converse in person with a human whose words are determined by a conversational agent computer program. Speech shadowing involves a person (the shadower) repeating vocal stimuli originating from a separate communication source in real-time. Humans shadowing for conversational agent sources (e.g., chat bots) become hybrid agents ("echoborgs") capable of face-to-face interlocution. We repor…
