The curious case of the marginalized mystics
Given that the more apophatic strand of mysticism resonates more with the way contemporary philosophers are apt to think about mystical experience, the fact that apophatic mysticism was a bit of a fringe enterprise in the Middle Ages calls for explanation. The explanations that are suggested within the pages of Christina Van Dyke's A Hidden Wisdom are not typically historical-contextual explanations, but theological ones. This article examines ap…
Thomas Aquinas and Contemplation
Everybody knows (for the relevant value of ‘everybody’) that, for Thomas Aquinas, perfect happiness consists in intellectual contemplation of the divine essence, with the will’s delight or enjoyment being a necessary concomitant of that beatific vision but not, strictly speaking, part of the essence of happiness. Beyond this boilerplate statement, however, most of us would be hard-pressed to say much more about contemplation in Aquinas. What sort…

Mobilizing the Past
In 2018 the outgoing German ambassador to the UK, Peter Ammon, suggested that a sense of national identity based on how Britain had “stood alone” during the Second World War, combined with a negative perception of Germany’s supposed domination of the EU, had fuelled Euroscepticism and contributed to the success of the Leave campaign in the 2016 Brexit referendum. While recognising that references to Britain’s wartime past and fears of German powe…
The Upper Paleolithic of the Americas
Substantial archaeological and genetic data suggest that the initial occupation of the Americas is more complex and diverse than previously thought. As evidence for multiple patterns and/or adaptive strategies in distinct areas of the western hemisphere emerge, the terminology remains incoherent. Most terms are applied arbitrarily, incorporate “Clovis,” or refer only to single populations and not the chronological period. We argue for inclusion o…

The Cambridge Companion to Medieval Ethics
Ethics was a central preoccupation of medieval philosophers, and medieval ethical thought is rich, diverse, and inventive. Yet standard histories of ethics often skip quickly over the medievals, and histories of medieval philosophy often fail to do justice to the centrality of ethical concerns in medieval thought. This volume presents the full range of medieval ethics in Christian, Islamic, and Jewish philosophy in a way that is accessible to a n…

Going Places
Writing in 1997, Britain's leading historian of tourism John K. Walton lamented that ‘tourism has not been accepted into the charmed circle of acceptable themes in European history’. While it would be premature to suggest that tourism has now been welcomed into this select inner circle on equal terms with more traditional fields of research, there is nevertheless much for historians of tourism to be positive about. Over the course of the last two…
A History of A ustralian Corporate Bonds
We compile a new unit‐record data set of A ustralian corporate bond issuance, which sheds light on developments in the bond market since the early twentieth century. Reflecting the evolution of the economy, privatisations, and changes in the regulatory landscape the following trends are noteworthy: (i) issuance today is largely by private entities whereas government‐owned corporations dominated historically; (ii) the issuer base has shifted away …
Human Freedom and Agency
Thomas Aquinas (1224/6–1274) lived an active, demanding academic and ecclesiastical life that ended while he was still comparatively young. He nonetheless produced many works, varying in length from a few pages to a few volumes. The Oxford Handbook of Aquinas is an introduction to this influential author and a guide to his thought on almost all the major topics on which he wrote. The book begins with an account of Aquinas's life and works. The ne…
Human Freedom and Agency
Aquinas argued that every human action is for the sake of some end. Aquinas distinguished between a human action (actus humanus) and an action of a human being (action hominis). Human actions are those that proceed from human beings in virtue of their distinguishing power, which is to be in control of their own actions (dominus suorum actuum) through reason and will. Anything else that a human being does can be called the action of a human being,…
The Watch on the Rhine
Nine decades have passed since the victors of the First World War resolved to occupy the German Rhineland. Today, the events of this twelve-year occupation are at the very limits of living memory, and it is therefore all the more remarkable that the most recent historical account of the Rhineland occupation to be published has been written by someone who experienced the occupation at first hand. Margaret Pawley, the daughter of a political office…
Basic Writings
Thomas Aquinas
The great medieval philosopher Thomas Aquinas (1224/6-1274) was Dominican regent master in theology at the University of Paris, where he presided over a series of questions - academic debates - on ethical topics. This volume, first published in 2005, offers translations of disputed questions on the nature of virtues in general, the fundamental or 'cardinal' virtues of practical wisdom, justice, courage, and temperateness, the divinely bestowed vi…
The Doctrine of Univocity Is True and Salutary
After clearing up some misunderstandings of Scotus’s doctrine of univocity, I argue that the doctrine of univocity is true. All predications about God must be reducible to univocity if they are to be intelligible at all. So even if the doctrine has unwelcome consequences, we ought to affirm it anyway; it is not the job of the theologian or philosopher to shrink from uncomfortable truths. I then argue that the doctrine of univocity in fact has no …
The Cambridge Companion to Abelard
Peter Abelard (1079–1142) is one of the greatest philosophers of the medieval period. Although best known for his views about universals and his dramatic love affair with Heloise, he made a number of important contributions in metaphysics, logic, philosophy of language, mind and cognition, philosophical theology, ethics, and literature. The essays in this volume survey the entire range of Abelard's thought, and examine his overall achievement in …

The Contemporay Presidency
How influential are former American presidents? Though entitled to salary, staff, and security, on leaving office ex‐presidents lose all formal governing powers. The power of ex‐presidents therefore resides in their capacity to exercise indirect and informal influence in a political system over which they no longer have direct, formal control. The authors argue that the opportunities to exercise postpresidential power are greater than ever and ma…

Reason, Morality, and Voluntarism in Duns Scotus
The Unmitigated Scotus
The Libertarian Foundations of Scotus’s Moral Philosophy
The Thomist 62 (1998): 193-215 THE LIBERTARIAN FOUNDATIONS OF SCOTUS'S MORAL PHILOSOPHY THOMAS WILLIAMS The University ofIowa Iowa City, Iowa CONTEMPORARY LIBERTARIANS typically claim that their conception of freedom is necessary to safeguard our commonsense understanding of moral responsibility, but beyond that claim little is said about the implications of libertarianism for moral philosophy. Perhaps philosophers generally do not think it has a…
A Most Methodical Lover?
1. The Issue Almost all interpreters of Scotus now agree in rejecting the old-fashioned charge that Scotus "thought God would act in a completely arbitrary way in his dealings with creatures."2 As they point out, Scotus says in several places that God is ordinatissime volens —"a most methodical lover," as one translator has it.3 Scotus also speaks of God as willing "most reasonably," and in one place he even says that God made all things "with ri…
From Metaethics to Action Theory
Work on Scotus's moral psychology and action theory has been concerned almost exclusively with questions about the relationship between will and intellect and in particular about the freedom of the will itself. In this chapter I broaden the scope of inquiry. For I contend that Scotus's views in moral psychology are best understood against the background of a long tradition of metaethical reflection on the relationship between being and goodness. …
The Cambridge Companion to Duns Scotus
Each volume in this series of companions to major philosophers contains specially commissioned essays by an international team of scholars, together with a substantial bibliography, and will serve as a reference work for students and non-specialists. One aim of the series is to dispel the intimidation such readers often feel when faced with the work of a difficult and challenging thinker. John Duns Scotus (1265/6–1308) was (along with Aquinas and…
