Relationship of prefrontal cortex activity with anhedonia and cognitive function in major depressive disorder
These findings indicate that changes in prefrontal lobe oxygenated hemoglobin levels, a region implicated in hedonic motivation and cognitive function, may serve as potential biomarkers for interventions targeting individuals with MDD. Our results corroborate the clinical consensus that the prefrontal cortex is a primary target for non-invasive neuromodulatory treatments for depression
The association between dietary quality, sleep duration, and depression symptoms in the general population
In summary, our study suggests that individuals affected by the individual and synergistic effect of an unhealthy diet and unhealthy sleep duration are more susceptible to experiencing depressive symptoms
Multiplex influences on vigilance and biochemical variables induced by sleep deprivation
This study demonstrates that SD influences biochemical, physiological, cognitive variables, and the significantly changed variables may serve as candidates of SD markers. These findings may further our understanding of the detrimental consequence of sleep disturbance at multiple levels
The psychometric properties of positive and negative beliefs about the rumination scale in Chinese undergraduates
The Chinese versions of the PBRS and the NBRS were generally shown to be reliable and valid, but their newly extracted structures fit the Chinese college students better than their original structures. These new models of PBRS and NBRS are of value to be further explored in Chinese population
Relationship of insight to neurocognitive function and risk of recurrence in depression
Lack of insight is associated with recurrence and impaired cognitive flexibility in patients with MDD
Decreased plasma neuropeptides in first-episode schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder
Our research shows decreased circulating neuropeptides have the potential to differentiate severe mental illnesses from controls. These neuropeptides are promising treatment targets for improving clinical symptoms and cognitive function in FES, BD, and MDD
Abnormal Brain Structure Morphology in Early-Onset Schizophrenia
With less exposure to environmental and medication influences, individuals with early-onset schizophrenia (EOS) may provide valuable evidence to study the pathogenesis and phenotypic pattern of schizophrenia.T1-weighted magnetic resonance images were collected in 60 individuals with EOS and 40 healthy controls. Voxel-based morphometry and surface-based morphometry analyzes were performed. Gray matter volume, cortical thickness and cortical surfac…
A Whole Transcriptome Analysis in Peripheral Blood Suggests That Energy Metabolism and Inflammation Are Involved in Major Depressive Disorder
Our results suggested that the processes of energy metabolism and inflammation may be involved in the pathophysiology of MDD
Effects of Stress in Adaptation to Undergraduate Life on Psychiatric Morbidity
Stress from adaptation to university life and pressures from academic study exert stronger effects on psychiatric morbidity among students than childhood traumatic experiences and current family problems, although these factors are closely interrelated. Mental health services for students should focus on adaptation to university life and pressures from academic study as well as external factors of childhood trauma and family problems
Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Validation of the Fear of Covid-19 Scale for Chinese University Students
the validity and reliability of C-FCV-19S are satisfactory, and the optimal cutoff point was 17.5. The C-FCV-19S can be applied adopted in Chinese university students
Changes in Regional Homogeneity of Medication-Free Major Depressive Disorder Patients With Different Onset Ages
Background: Neurobiological mechanisms underlying the development of major depressive disorder (MDD) may differ depending on onset ages. Our aim was to determine whether regional homogeneity (ReHo) changes in early-onset depression (EOD) and late-onset depression (LOD) are different, which could also delineate EOD and LOD. Methods: Ninety-one MDD patients and 115 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited, and resting-state functional magnetic resonan…
Functional Connectivity of Nucleus Accumbens and Medial Prefrontal Cortex With Other Brain Regions During Early-Abstinence Is Associated With Alcohol Dependence and Relapse
Background: Alcohol dependence (AD) is a chronic recurrent brain disease that causes a heavy disease burden worldwide, partly due to high relapse rates after detoxification. Verified biomarkers are not available for AD and its relapse, although the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) may play important roles in the mechanism of addiction. This study investigated AD- and relapse-associated functional connectivity (FC) of th…
Potential Biomarkers for Predicting Depression in Diabetes Mellitus
Objective: To identify the potential biomarkers for predicting depression in diabetes mellitus using support vector machine to analyze routine biochemical tests and vital signs between two groups: subjects with both diabetes mellitus and depression, and subjects with diabetes mellitus alone. Methods: Electronic medical records upon admission and biochemical tests and vital signs of 135 patients with both diabetes mellitus and depression and 187 p…
Plasma Metabolomics Profiling of Metabolic Pathways Affected by Major Depressive Disorder
Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common disease which is complicated by metabolic disorder. Although MDD has been studied relatively intensively, its metabolism is yet to be elucidated. Methods: To profile the global pathophysiological processes of MDD patients, we used metabolomics to identify differential metabolites and applied a new database Metabolite set enrichment analysis (MSEA) to discover dysfunctions of metabolic pathwa…
The Analects and Sense of Justice
Moralism generally does not constitute a major part of the content of modern Western legal scholarship, but it must occupy the very center of any meaningful discussion of Chinese law. In short, there can be no real understanding of Chinese law without grasping its moral anchor and content. This article focuses on the most important of classical Chinese moral texts, the Confucian Analects, to show how it in fact formed both the core content and th…
Prognostic Utility of Multivariate Morphometry in Schizophrenia
Background: Voxel-based morphometry studies have repeatedly highlighted the presence of distributed gray matter changes in schizophrenia, but to date, it is not clear if clinically useful prognostic information can be gleaned from structural imaging. The suspected association between gray matter volume (GMV) and duration of psychotic illness, antipsychotic exposure, and symptom severity also limits the prognostic utility of morphometry. We addres…
Aberrant Dynamic Functional Network Connectivity and Graph Properties in Major Depressive Disorder
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a complex mood disorder characterized by persistent and overwhelming depression. Previous studies have identified abnormalities in large scale functional brain networks in MDD, yet most of them were based on static functional connectivity. In contrast, here we explored disrupted topological organization of dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) in MDD based on graph theory. One hundred and eighty-two MDD…
I couldn't hold the whole thing’
Taiwan has one of the lowest fertility rates in Asia. High direct and indirect costs of childbearing have been identified as key drivers behind this at the macro-level, but little is known about the mechanism of these influences at the individual-level. In 32 qualitative interviews with parents in Taipei, we sought to explore the salient factors for couples in their decisions about having further children. We identified a tension between gendered…
