Effects of Race and Adolescent Decision-Making on Status Attainment and Self-Esteem
This paper tests a structural model of the impact of life choices on self-esteem. Four sets of variables are included in the model: ascribed statuses and other background variables, life-choice variables, current statuses, and self-esteem. Race, alienation, and interpersonal mistrust
A structural model is proposed that explains race differences in interpersonal trust as a function of blacks' disadvantaged position vis à vis whites in the socioeconomic opportunity structure. This disadvantage, in turn, engenders a sense of alienation that is detrimental to the development of trustin the "generalized other."
