Renewable Natural Resources Management for Mountain Communities and Resource Constraints and Management Options in Mountain Watersheds of the Himalayas
Relationships Between Landsliding and Land Use in the Likhu Khola Drainage Basin, Middle Hills, Nepal
A great deal has been written about the relationship between landsliding and land use change, especially deforestation, in the Himalaya. But few detailed quantitative studies have examined this relationship. The present article reports the results of a 3-year study of landsliding in 4 subcatchments of the Likhu Khola drainage basin in the Middle Hills, Nepal. During the years of study (1991–1993), 381 landslides were noted, the vast majority of w…

Volcanoes
Why do volcanoes erupt, and in so many different ways? What happens when a volcano erupts in the sea? How can eruptions be predicted or even modified? Many such questions are posed and answered in this clearly written and wide-ranging introduction to volcanoes. From time immemorial the power and drama of volcanoes have terrified those who lived in their vicinity and fascinated those from afar. This book sets these impressive phenomena in their wo…

The status of temperate hillslopes in the Holocene
A number of studies have suggested that the majority of slopes in temperate latitudes have changed little during the Holocene. However, this is largely an untested assumption. This paper examines the rationale for such an assumption and finds it lacking in many respects. Much will depend on the intensity and effectiveness of landscape-forming processes and the sensitivity of the landscape to change. Using a number of specific examples it is sugge…

Geostatistics in Physical Geography. Part I
Geostatistics grew from meteorologists' desire to interpolate weather characteristics from sparse data, and from mining engineers who wanted to estimate quantities of minerals in bodies of rock from drill cores. In both cases the properties of interest behaved as spatially correlated random variables. Practice in mining is now underpinned by sound theory, the theory of regionalized variables. It is widely recognized that the theory is properly ap…
Geostatistics in Physical Geography. Part II
Regionalized variable theory has many potential applications in physical geography. The principal one is the estimation of properties distributed over the earth's surface to assess their spatial variation. The paper illustrates this with examples in which the thickness of cover loam and the stone content of the soil are estimated and mapped over small regions. The same procedure is used to map the annual rainfall over England and Wales, the resul…
