Meteorological trends (1991–2004) at Arctic Station, Central West Greenland (69°15'N) in a 130 years perspective
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 106(1):45–55, 2006 Meteorological data from Arctic Station (69°15'N, 53°31'W) located on Disko Island (West Greenland) has been analysed for the period 1991–2004 and used to describe the general climate at Disko and to evaluate meteorological trends. Parameters include daily observations of snow cover, sea ice cover and bihourly logged air and ground temperatures, wind regime, pressure, precipita…
Total sediment budget of a transgressive barrier-spit, Skallingen, SW Denmark
Average sea-level rise in the northern part of the Danish Wadden Sea has been 1.3 mm a−1 during the last 100 years but during the last 25 years a rise of 4.2 mm a−1 was observed. Concurrent with the recent sea-level rise the Skallingen barrier spit has migrated landward by 3–5 m a−1. Long term sediment budgets for each of the morphological units involved in the migration are reviewed (e.g. onshore in the shore face +90.000 m3 a−1, longshore -641.…
Role of landscape parameters in riverine run-off, and sediment and organic matter yield on Disko Island, West Greenland
Measurements of discharge and suspended sediment and organic matter yield from nine different drainage basins on the island Disko in central West Greenland were carried out in the period 19–30 July 1997. A series of landscape properties (glacier cover, altitude, slope, aspect and vegetation cover) were measured for each drainage basin from a digital elevation model and a satellite image. Principal Component Analysis and regression statistics have…

An automatic meteorological station has been operating at the Arctic Station (69° 15′N, 53° 31′W) in West Greenland since 1990. This paper summarises meteorological parameters during 2001, including snow cover, ground temperatures and active layer development. Abstract In South East Greenland, the north-western part of the Mittivakkat Glacier calves into a lake, called Icefall Lake, situated at its terminus. To examen the calving frequency of the…
Investigation of a modern glacimarine sedimentary environment in the fjord Kuannersuit Sulluat, Disko, West Greenland
A 56 cm long sediment core from Kuannersuit Sulluat, a fjord on the island Disko, West Greenland is used to infer modern sedimentation rates and describe the sedimentary environment. The fjord abuts a catchment area dominated by a recently surging glacier (1995–1999). Analyses of the core included magnetic susceptibility, x-radiographs and grain size analysis. From these analyses it is concluded that deposition takes place both through sediment s…

An automatic meteorological station has been operating at the Arctic Station (69°15'N, 53°31'W) in West Greenland since 1990. This paper summarizes meteorological parameters during 2000 including snow and sea ice cover, ground temperatures and active layer development, and presents comments on the local permafrost thickness

Meteorological Observations in 1999 at the Arctic Station, Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn), Central West Greenland/Evidence of a warmer climate around AD 600, Mittivakkat Glacier, South East Greenland
In october 1990 an automatic weather station was established at the Arctic Station (65° 15', 53°31'W), Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn), Central West Greenland. The Station register parameters each 20 minutes, and the paramters have been described in an earlier paper in this journal by Nielsen et al.(1995). The present paper summarizes meteorological parameters during 1999. During a field campaign in 1999, woody remains from Salix glauca were found on a nu…

An automatic meteorological station has been operating at the Arctic Station (69°15'N, 53°31'W) in West Greenland since 1990. This paper summarises meteorological parameters during 1998, including snow cover, ground temperatures and active layer development, and presents comments on the local permafrost thickness. Abstract Active layer monitoring in Greenland was started in 1996 and 1997, and forms part of the Circumpolar Active Layer Monitoring …
Coastal Morphodynamics at Skallingen, SW Denmark
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 1998: 20–30. The present paper discusses some preliminary results from a field experiment on sediment transport and morphological change on a beach subjected to storm surge activity. The data were collected at the barrier spit of Skallingen during October/November 1996. This period was characterized by a succession of storms which resulted in high water and wave energy levels, culminating in a st…

Variations of Spacings between Beach Cusps discussed in relation to Edge Wave Theory
Rasch, Morten, Jørgen Nielsen & Niels Nielsen: Variations of Spacings between Beach Cusps discussed in relation to Edge Wave Theory. Geografisk Tidsskrift 93:49–55. Copenhagen 1993. Variations in cusp spacings of beach cusp systems have been examined, and the conclusion is that the apparent regularity of the spacings is not always real. Established edge wave theory predicts equal cusp spacings, and accordingly, the theory needs to be improved or …

T HERE are many other wells and becks also which are sometimes 1 flooded with water, shooting it out high into the air and covering everything near with foam. So wrote Saxo Grammaticus, the Danish historian, and it is not surprising that people in the thirteenth century knew of hot-water springs in Iceland which occasionally shot high into the air. The early colonists would have had many and varied experiences settling in the new land, and the ho…
