The Centenary of the Society's Drawing Office
After using the services of well-known cartographers in the early days, the RGS set up a drawing office of its own in 1878, appointing the first draughtsman in May of that year. Since that time, the Drawing Office has increased in size and scope, and the techniques and equipment available to the draughtsmen have changed greatly, too. The First Map of Rockall
The tiny uninhabited island of Rockall, less than 20 m high, situated in the Atlantic Ocean about 300 km west of St. Kilda, has been formally part of the United Kingdom since 1955. Except with the aid of helicopters, landings are very difficult. In 1971, the summit of the rock was removed to enable an automatic navigation light to be installed in 1972. A New Map of the Mount Everest Region
The society has published with the support of the Mount Everest Foundation a map of the Mount Everest region on scale of i: 100,000 embodying all available surveys and information. Flat copies of the map can be obtained from the office of the Society at ijs 6d (to Fellows 15s), plus postage.
