  • The Relationship Between In-Home Water Service and the Risk of Respiratory Tract, Skin, and Gastrointestinal Tract Infections Among Rural Alaska Natives

Thomas W Hennessy, Troy Ritter et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2008•Citada por: 11•Referências: 13

Objectives. We investigated the relationship between the presence of in-home piped water and wastewater services and hospitalization rates for respiratory tract, skin, and gastrointestinal tract infections in rural Alaska. Methods. We determined in-home water service and hospitalizations for selected infectious diseases among Alaska Natives by region during 2000 to 2004. Within 1 region, infant respiratory hospitalizations and skin infections for…

  • Carriage patterns of Staphylococcus aureus in a healthy non-hospital population of adults and children

    Open Access•C A Armstrong-Esther, J E Smith•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1976

Bacteriological examination of healthy school children and adults for Staphylococcus aureus by weekly swabbing of nose, throat and hands over extended periods demonstrated a general transition from persistent to transient carrier status between 10 and 20 years of age. Adult transient carriers were commoner among manual than office workers and frequently yielded biochemically atypical isolates, possibly because of acquired resistance to typical st…

  • An analysis of the heat deaths in St. Louis during July, 1966

Austin Henschel, Lindsay Burton et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health…•1969

Maximum daily temperatures of 90 to 95F occurred on most of the days between mid-June and 8 July 1966. From 9 July to 15 July the mean daily temperature was 12 to 17F above normal with daily maximums of 101 to 106F. The daily minimum temperatures were near 80F or above so that little night time relief from the heat was possible. Death certificates were analyzed for the four-week period of 1 through 29 July, 1966. All pertinent data from each cert…
