River science
Integrated river science provides decision-making life-skills for individuals and communities facing environmental change; it is a variant of critical physical geography through its socio-political dimensions. As an example, the frequency and magnitude of river flooding are amplified by climate change: society needs to understand how to cope through learning, adaptative behaviour and planning. Choices should be informed by trusted science that ca…
Time, scale and change in river landscapes
The basis for a scientific understanding of river landscapes is fluvial geomorphology. However, the base of the subject in university research schools has meant that a simple interpretation of river landforms has been missing from UK landscape studies. This paper attempts to redress the balance by setting down the basic time and space scales along which our rivers have sculpted their valley floors, floodplains and channels. The fluvial landscape …
Hydrology and the River Environment
BL A practical teaching course BL Takes an environmental approach to hydrology This is a textbook in environmental hydrology-a field of study concerned with the basic system of water circulation and patters of runoff and the major ways in which human occupation of Earth alters both processes and pattersn. It focuses on the river basin or catchment unit not only because of its geographical appeal but because it is the basic experimental and data-g…

The Carboniferous Limestone of the UK as an Aquifer Rock
A Model of Subterranean Limestone Erosion in the British Isles Based on Hydrology
Mobile particles play crucial roles for contaminant transport in karst aquifers, but few studies have investigated the relationships between sediment dynamics and contaminants. This is partly due to the difficulty in monitoring suspended particles: Turbidity is easy to measure but does not deliver detailed information on the size and type of particles; mineralogical laboratory analyses are laborious and not suitable for continuous monitoring. A p…
