The unseen, unknown and misunderstood
This paper explores some of the hidden causes of inequality in the outcomes of development initiatives in the Hunza Valley, Pakistan. A case study of one village, Ganesh, serves to demonstrate that alternative perceptions, attitudes and initiatives which are independent of major organisations may at first sight seem less ‘successful’. As a result of the Rio Conference, mountain areas have been placed at the centre of several international initiatives to prepare suitable strategies for long‐term development. Tsunami sedimentation associated with the Lisbon earthquake of 1 November AD 1755
A description is given of a distinctive marine deposit at Boca do Rio on the Algarve coast of Portugal. It is proposed here that the sediment accumulation was deposited by the tsunami generated by the Lisbon earthquake of 1 November, AD 1755. The deposit exhibits sedimentary characteristics quite unlike other coastal sediment accumulations that are deposited by more moderate wave régimes.
