  • IMF Lending Programs and Repression in Autocracies

    Open Access•Stephen C Nelson, Christopher Dinkel et al.•ARTICLE•International Studies Quarterly•2024•Referências: 18

Do International Monetary Fund (IMF) lending programs increase repression in borrowing countries? We argue that repression worsens when autocratic governments enter conditional lending arrangements with the IMF. Autocracies are likelier than democracies to harshly crackdown during episodes of heightened protest and unrest triggered by IMF-mandated adjustment and structural reform programs. But harsh repression of anticipated spikes in dissent spu…

  • Global Governance in Time

    Karen J Alter, Stephen C Nelson•ARTICLE•World Politics•2024•Citada por: 3

Will China's rise fundamentally change global governance? Answering this question requires grasping how sequences shape the development of institutions across time. The books that we review adapt the standard historical institutional (hi) conceptual toolkit—path dependence, reactive sequences, and gradual institutional change—to explain institutional persistence and change in global governance. We argue that international regime complexity (irc) …

  • Billionaire Politicians

    Open Access•Daniel Krcmaric, Stephen C Nelson et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Politics•2024•Citada por: 7•Referências: 46

We introduce an original dataset of formal political participation for over 2,000 individuals included in the Forbes Billionaires List. We find that billionaire politicians are a surprisingly common phenomenon: Over 11% of the world’s billionaires have held or sought political office. Even compared to other elite groups known for producing politicians from their ranks, this is a high rate of political participation. Moreover, billionaires focus t…

  • Studying Leaders and Elites

Open Access•Daniel Krcmaric, Stephen C Nelson et al.•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Political Science•2020•Citada por: 58•Referências: 91

The last two decades have seen a revival in work that takes the role of individual leaders and elites seriously. This article surveys new research that explores how biographical factors influence their behavior. We call this literature the personal biography approach to political leadership. Our survey first lays out four mechanisms through which biographical characteristics might affect leader behavior. We then discuss the main findings, groupin…

  • The Mass Political Economy of Capital Controls

    Open Access•David A Steinberg, Stephen C Nelson•ARTICLE•Comparative Political Studies•2019•Citada por: 6•Referências: 62

This article examines mass public opinion toward international financial-market regulations, known as “capital controls.” Conventional wisdom maintains that most voters do not pay attention to or care about capital controls, but no previous studies have directly evaluated this claim. We argue that capital controls are likely to become a publicly salient issue under some conditions—specifically, when economically unstable countries reimpose regula…

  • Default Positions

    Open Access•Stephen C Nelson, David A Steinberg•ARTICLE•International Studies Quarterly•2018•Citada por: 9•Referências: 55

This article examines public opinion toward sovereign debt disputes. Using evidence from multiple surveys fielded in Argentina—the country at the center of the most prominent legal dispute with foreign bondholders—we explore the sources of public support for debt repayment. Our evidence shows that economic self-interest and competing issue frames have little impact on attitudes toward debt repayment in Argentina. Individuals' opinions toward debt…

  • Organizational Culture

Catherine Weaver, Stephen C Nelson•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of International…•2017

This chapter argues that attention to organizational culture, in addition to other explanatory factors, can greatly enrich how we understand and explain the complex forms, functions, and dynamics of international organizations (IOs) in the world today. It begins by conceptualizing organizational culture in a way that is amenable to observation and analysis. It then demonstrates how and when culture matters, and how much culture matters, especiall…

  • Translating sickle cell guidelines into practice for primary care providers with Project Echo

Open Access•Lisa M Shook, Christina Bennett Farrell et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Education Online•2016

STORM TeleECHO has the potential to increase implementation of the NHLBI evidence-based guidelines, especially increased use of hydroxyurea, resulting in improvements in the quality of care and outcomes for children and young adults with SCD. This model could be replicated in other pediatric chronic illness conditions to improve PCP knowledge and confidence in delivering evidence-based care

  • Playing Favorites

    Open Access•Stephen C Nelson•ARTICLE•International Organization•2014•Citada por: 73•Referências: 64

International organizations (IOs) suffuse world politics, but the International Monetary Fund (IMF) stands out as an unusually important IO. My research suggests that IMF lending is systematically biased. Preferential treatment is largely driven by the degree of similarity between beliefs held by IMF officials and key economic policy-makers in the borrowing country. This article describes the IMF's ideational culture as “neoliberal,” and assumes …

  • Uncertainty, Risk, and the Financial Crisis of 2008

    Open Access•Stephen C Nelson, Peter J Katzenstein•ARTICLE•International Organization•2014•Citada por: 64•Referências: 46

The distinction between uncertainty and risk, originally drawn by Frank Knight and John Maynard Keynes in the 1920s, remains fundamentally important today. In the presence of uncertainty, market actors and economic policy-makers substitute other methods of decision making for rational calculation-specifically, actors' decisions are rooted in social conventions. Drawing from innovations in financial markets and deliberations among top American mon…

  • Reading the right signals and reading the signals right

    Peter J Katzenstein, Stephen C Nelson•ARTICLE•Review of International Political…•2013•Citada por: 14•Referências: 39

Although the meltdown in the American financial system in 2008 created the most profound financial crisis in sixty years, the field of International Political Economy (IPE) has remained curiously silent. More worrisome is the inability of the paradigmatic approach to the study of IPE in the United States – Open Economy Politics (OEP) – to shed much light on the causes of the crisis. We develop the conceptual distinction between risk and uncertain…

  • Does democracy promote capital account liberalization

    David A Steinberg, Stephen C Nelson et al.•Citada por: 2•Referências: 42

Conventional wisdom maintains that democracy promotes market-oriented economic reforms. This paper argues that democracy’s effect on economic liberalization hinges on international-systemic factors. To develop this argument, we focus on one important reform issue: capital account liberalization. We hypothesize that the level of financial openness abroad moderates the relationship between democracy and financial policy at home. An open global fina…
