Effects of Neighborhood Disconnection on Psychological Distress and Suicide Risk Associated with Interpersonal Violence Within Racial Groups
Experiences of Personal and Vicarious Victimization for Black Adults with Serious Mental Illnesses
The purpose of this study was to explore experiences of violence and victimization among Black adults with serious mental illnesses (SMIs) in mental health services. Fourteen Black individuals with SMIs participated in semi-structured interviews exploring their experiences and definitions of community. Thematic analysis revealed that participants experienced personal and vicarious criminal/violent encounters, putting them at high risk for adverse…
A Social–Ecological Model for Navigating Safety Across Time
Objective: Coupled with disproportionate experiences of community violence, Black adults with serious mental illnesses are also vulnerable to racism, discrimination due to mental illness, and/or stigma that can negatively impact their sense of safety. As such, the present study explored the role of safety in the experiences of community living and receipt of mental health services for Black adults with serious mental illnesses. Method: Using prin…
Mental health care utilization in individuals with high levels of psychosis-like experiences
Objective: Racial inequities in mental health care utilization (MHCU) are well documented. Marginalized racial groups are more likely to report psychosis-like experiences (PLEs) and are at elevated risk for racial discrimination and trauma, impacting PLE severity. Little is known about how factors associated with race impact treatment seeking among individuals reporting PLEs. The present study examined associations between race, trauma, discrimin…
Social Work Training Intervention to Increase Referral Rates for Preventive Psychosis Services
Purpose Social workers are employed in a broad range of community settings, in which they may be able to identify youth with emerging psychotic symptoms and facilitate connection to specialized services. Methods: This randomized controlled trial tested the efficacy of a training intervention for social workers ( N = 959) intended to increase the volume of referrals and rate of successful referrals to specialized early psychosis services. Results:…
Special Considerations in Social Network Interviewing and Mapping with Vulnerable Populations
This short take describes the process of enhancing social network interviews with qualitative inquiry to facilitate participant recall, contextualize participant-alter relationships, and increase cultural responsiveness with populations with cognitive impairments. The authors illustrate this process, including the use of a qualitative interviewing name generator, with an example of a mixed-methods project exploring community experiences with adul…
Is It Safe? Community Integration for Individuals With Serious Mental Illnesses
Purpose: Community integration is a key component of recovery for individuals with serious mental illnesses (SMIs). The goal of the current study is to explore the nature and impact of safety concerns for experiences of communities for individuals with SMIs. Method: Using constructivist grounded theory, 30 semistructured interviews were analyzed to explore the depth and breadth of individuals’ safety concerns, how individuals manage these concern…
Social Networks, Community Integration and Recovery for Individuals with Severe Mental Illnesses in India and the U.S
The Ties That Bind and Unbound Ties
This report explores the nature and quality of social ties of formerly homeless individuals in recovery from serious mental illness and substance abuse and how these ties relate to experiences of community. Using grounded theory and cross-case analysis techniques, we analyzed 34 qualitative interviews conducted with predominantly racial/ethnic minority individuals receiving mental health services. Participants described a range of involvement and…
A quick scoping review of psychosocial treatment recommendations for African Americans with schizophrenia spectrum disorders
Objective: To determine the generalizability of the Schizophrenia Patient Outcomes Research Team (PORT) 2009 treatment recommendations to African Americans. Methods: We examined inclusion of African Americans with schizophrenia spectrum disorders in 58 studies across seven interventions. Results: Evidence varied by intervention. Representation of African Americans ranged from 0% to 83%. The strongest evidence was found for assertive community tre…
The impact of exposure to gun violence fatality on mental health outcomes in four urban U.S. settings
Social Support-Centered Versus Symptom-Centered Models in Predicting Functional Outcomes for Individuals with Schizophrenia
Overall, the findings suggest that models for understanding functioning and interventions in schizophrenia need to be differentially focused, depending on the targeted outcome. Implications for social work practice and policy are discussed
Race‐Related Differences in the Experiences of Family Members of Persons with Mental Illness Participating in the Nami Family to Family Education Program
Families play an important role in the lives of individuals with mental illness. Coping with the strain of shifting roles and multiple challenges of caregiving can have a huge impact. Limited information exists regarding race‐related differences in families’ caregiving experiences, their abilities to cope with the mental illness of a loved one, or their interactions with mental health service systems. This study examined race‐related differences …
Effectiveness of a High End Users Program for Persons with Psychiatric Disorders
Effects of exercise on meal related gut hormone responses and CCK sensitivity
The triage of stroke rehabilitation
In this paper we describe the use of triage to select patients for a trial in which a comparison was made of the effectiveness of a stroke unit and medical units in the rehabilitation of acute stroke. Completing the triage for hospital admission of stroke enabled an estimate to be made of the size of a stroke unit per unit of population
Automated follow-up facilities in Canada for monitoring delayed health effects
Increased public awareness of the possible presence of carcinogens and other potentially harmful agents in the workplace and in other areas of the environment has created a demand for studies to determine the extent of the risks associated with exposure to such agents. These studies require large numbers of individuals in various "control" populations to be followed-up over long periods of time. Such large-scale follow-up can be greatly facilitat…
