Sources of Stress and Coping Strategies Among Urban African American Adolescents
Sleep, Positive Affect, and Circulating Interleukin-6 in Women With Temporomandibular Joint Disorder
OBJECTIVE: Systemic inflammation is commonly observed in idiopathic chronic pain conditions, including temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). Trait positive affect (PA) is associated with lower inflammation in healthy controls, but those effects may be threatened by poor sleep. The associations between PA with proinflammatory cytokine activity and potential moderation by sleep in chronic pain are not known. We thus investigated the association b…
Disability on Film
Looking at two films that center upon a sensory disability (Chaplin’s City Lights and Randa Haines’ Children of a Lesser God), I propose that despite many gestures of sensitivity, these films reinforce an othering of the non-normative subject through conventional film codes and conventions. For example, in Haines’ film, the protagonist James Leeds (William Hurt) delivers a lecture on facing his deaf students so that they can read his lips. Howeve…
The Use of X-ray Computed Tomography Technologies in Forensic Anthropology
The use of radiology, including X-ray computed tomography (CT), to examine skeletal remains is not new, but the use of postmortem CT (PMCT) in medicolegal investigations by forensic anthropologists is relatively rare, at least in the United States. The use of medical or industrial CT technology may be a viable option available to forensic anthropologists for digital preservation and to conduct nondestructive analyses of the internal and external …

Positive and Negative Affect Dimensions in Chronic Knee Osteoarthritis
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether daily and laboratory assessed pain differs as a function of the temporal stability and valence of affect in individuals with chronic knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS: One hundred fifty-one men and women with KOA completed 14 days of electronic diaries assessing positive affect (PA), negative affect (NA), and clinical pain. A subset of participants (n =79) engaged in quantitative sensory testing (QST). …

Psychological Distress After Major Burn Injury
Objective: To track the prevalence and stability of clinically significant psychological distress and to identify potentially modifiable inhospital symptoms predictive of long-term distress (physical, psychological, and social impairment). Method: We obtained data from the Burn Model Systems project, a prospective, multisite, cohort study of major burn injury survivors. The Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) was used to assess symptoms in-hospital (n …
