  • The Institutional Vision of Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Open Access•Robert Abelman, Amy Dalessandro•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Studies•2009

Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have been subjected to harsh criticism within the higher education community. A common theme is that the shared and archaic mission of these institutions compromises academic standards and keeps individual schools from effective leadership and competing for financial resources and quality students. A content analysis of the mission and vision statements from HBCUs was performed, and key linguis…

Robert Abelman, David Atkin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Broadcasting &…•1997•Citada por: 4•Referências: 6

The investigation reported here lends further support to the interrelated‐ness of television use motives, the identification of instrumental and ritualized patterns in how television is used, and the generalizability of these patterns to times when local television stations change network affiliation. By augmenting traditional measures of viewing affinity and viewer perceptions, this study expands the known parameters of television viewer uses an…

  • Child Attributes as Determinants of Parental Television-Viewing Mediation

    Open Access•Robert Abelman, Gary R Pettey•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•1989•Referências: 18

This study investigated intellectual giftedness in relation to parents' mediation of the television/child relationship. A total of 364 children and their parents compose the sample. Findings suggest that intellectual giftedness and, to a lesser degree, the quantity of children's television consumption influence parents' perceptions of the possible impact of television on their children and the type of mediation strategies they employ

  • A Comparison of Black and White Families as Portrayed On Religious and Secular Television Programs

    Open Access•Robert Abelman•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Studies•1989•Referências: 3

Few would argue with the fact that traditional roles and values that previously undergirded family life are currently in a state of turmoil. According to 1984 Census Bureau statistics (see Newsweek, 1985), illegitimacy has more than doubled in the past three decades and the rate of divorce continues to increase. Single parents headed 25.7% of the families with children under 18-years-old in the United States, with experts predicting that one of e…

This study examines the parental disciplinary practices under which children's awareness of prosocial TV portrayals are likely to be maximized and minimized. Two types of enduring parental styles of discipline-induction and sensitization-were extracted from the literature on children's moral development and applied to social learning from television. Data were gathered from a field survey that employed mother-child pairs. Results indicate that ch…

Recent research on children's use of television is reviewed and an innovative perspective based on Goffman's frame analysis theory is presented. Three developmental stages closely related to television use are differentiated using frame analysis theory. Current research findings are reinterpreted to develop and support our perspective. The implications of our theory for structuring future research on the use of television are considered
