Comprehensive, regional-scale climate impact assessments for primary industries - A framework for practitioners
Primary industries (biological production systems including agriculture, forestry and fisheries) are heavily dependent on climatic conditions for successful production and are directly exposed to future climate change. The cumulative effect of these potential impacts could place entire industries at risk. Climate impacts must therefore be assessed at regional scales to inform strategic adaptation decisions. Common approaches using biophysical pro…
We’re saying that we trust them but really we don’t
One key consequence of the UK leaving the EU (Brexit) is that it now has full responsibility for making its own international trade policy. In this context, NatCen and the Centre for Inclusive Trade Policy initiated Citizens’ Juries on the topic of trade policy. From the transcripts of these juries, we created a corpus of 317,974 words. Using corpus-assisted discourse analysis, we focus on the concept of trust in trade policy. We find that trust …
An Experimental Study of Endogenous Discretionary Controls on Employee Effort
Discretionary controls are controls that can be applied at the ex post discretion of the superior rather than being supported by pre-committed enforceable contracts. This study examines employees’ effort levels when a discretionary control is endogenously present (chosen by the superior) relative to when it is exogenously present (assigned by the experimenters). Results from our gift-exchange experiment regarding superiors’ choice of a discretion…
Applying the pathways to nature connectedness at a societal scale
The climate emergency and crisis of biodiversity loss show that the human–nature relationship is failing. This paper introduces the psychological construct of nature connectedness as a measurable target for improving the human–nature relationship, and therefore helping tackle the warming climate and loss of wildlife. The ‘pathways to nature connectedness’ (sensory contact, emotion, meaning, beauty and compassion) provide an important and flexible…
A critique of the internal complaints system of the Thai police
One of the ways in which the police can be held accountable for their actions is through an effective system for handling police complaints and misconduct cases. In this paper, the internal complaints system of the Thai police force is critically evaluated on the basis of an original empirical study. The findings suggest that the system is ineffective primarily because the handling of complaints and misconduct cases lacks impartiality. It is demo…

Associations between adolescent obesity and both individual and group-level social status
Background During adolescence there is an emergence of groupings sharing the same identity and reflecting social status (such as popular, academic or athletic ‘crowds’). Studies have demonstrated gender differences both in the importance of appearance for adolescent status and in associations between overweight and attractiveness ratings. There is also evidence that overweight/obese females are less likely to be nominated by others as friends. Ob…

How Green was Thames Valley
In 1994, Thames Valley Police (in the UK) began experimenting with restorative justice cautioning, in the Milton Keynes area. Other pilot programmes (most notably in Aylesbury) soon followed. The initiative was enthusiastically promoted by the then Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police, Sir Charles Pollard. One of his central claims was that re-offending rates had declined from 30% to 4% in Aylesbury as a result of restorative cautioning. This …

Student group working across universities
Distributed group working among teams of software engineers is increasingly evident in the "real world." Tools to support such working are at present limited to general-purpose groupware involving video, audio, chat, shared whiteboards, and shared workspaces. Within software engineering education, group tasks have an established role in the curriculum. However in general, groups are local to a particular university or institution and are composed…

Textualizing Evita
Although Eva Duarte de Perón was an historical figure whose life can be reconstructed on the basis of certain historical data and documents, a representation of her political and cultural significance is no longer a question of fidelity to history but of fidelity to an idea or image of her that encompasses what she has come to represent. Taking this notion as a point of departure and considering it in light of “El simulacro,” a short story by Jor…

Functional Constraints on Variation in Interlanguage Morphology
This paper critically evaluates the functional hypothesis that interlanguage (IL) is an efficient means of communicating referential information. The presentation includes: (1) a review of the evidence of previous investigations of the functional hypothesis in various different forms of language; (2) a description of two studies of the spoken English IL of learners with very different first language backgrounds (Chinese and Czech/Slovak) that sho…

Social Policy and Local Government
The Strathclyde experience makes it clear that local government should be precise about the objectives it wishes to pursue, the likelihood of achieving these, the methods it must adopt, and the best way of monitoring progress and effectiveness. Strathclyde Region has laid the base for a much more efficient delivery of services and resources relating to its particular needs, this information being derived from local data collection and analysis an…
