Recording Regional Dialects in Labrador Inuttitut (Research Note)
This paper reports on the Elder's Stories Project, an initiative to document regional dialects of Labrador Inuttitut across Nunatsiavut. The goal of this project is twofold: to preserve linguistic and cultural knowledge, with a focus on regional variation, and to create accessible spoken language resources for intermediate and advanced learners. This chapter provides an overview of noun incorporation in broad terms, examining nominals found either within or strictly adjacent to predicates from numerous languages. Syntactic issues have shifted from an earlier debate about whether noun incorporation was an operation in the lexicon or syntax to more recent discussion about whether noun incorporation is a narrow syntax or PF operation. This article provides an overview of some key properties of Eskimo-Aleut languages. It discusses the geographic range and number of speakers of these languages, some of which are seriously endangered. It also provides examples and discussion of the polysynthetic nature of some of these languages, where a single word can have the interpretation of a sentence.
