Infant’s thermal balance and the evolution of the human breast – a proof-of-concept study
The distinct size and shape of breasts in women is a uniquely human trait. This trait has no conclusive explanation as it is not a requirement for milk production. Additionally, breasts are already enlarged at puberty, which is usually long before the first pregnancy. We hypothesized that the perennially enlarged human breasts were potentially developed to support infant’s thermal balance by providing increased warming surface in skin-to-skin con…
The noble diets in Kourla Manor according to bone collagen δ13C and ẟ15N analyses – a comparative study between samples from four Finnish archaeological sites
Kahdesti haudattu majuri Toll
Sex- and site-specific, age-related changes in bone density – a Terry collection study
lumbar vertebra and three scans from the femur. The associations between the age, sex and bone density were analyzed. We were able to detect age-related bone loss in both vertebra and femur. It was observed that men tended to lose more bone density on the vertebra, whereas bone loss in women was more pronounced in the femur. We speculate that differences to modern and earlier archaeological populations are related to the major lifestyle differenc…
Re‐analysis of the Levänluhta skeletal material
Levänluhta, an Iron Age water burial site in Finland, and its material consisting of commingled skeletal remains and artifacts, has been studied by several researchers over the past 100 years, resulting in multiple interpretations of the people and the site. Previous skeletal analyses have concluded that the majority of the individuals represented in the remains were females and children and were of relatively short stature, so possibly nutrition…
Possible case of partial postmortem fetal extrusion
We report a plausible case of partial postmortem fetal extrusion dating to the turn of the 19th century. A fetal skull protruded from the obstetric canal of the partially mummified remains of an adult woman buried in a private burial chapel in Vihti, South Finland. The fetal size implies the mother having died during the early third trimester of her pregnancy. The cause of death was not obvious from the limited external examination of her remains…
Improving anatomical stature estimation method. The relationship between living stature and intervertebral disc thickness
Anatomical stature estimation methods reconstruct stature for skeletal specimens by adding up the heights of skeletal elements contributing to stature. In addition, these estimations factor in a certain amount of soft tissue known as "soft tissue correction". Our study focuses on the relationship between living stature and one of the major soft tissue contributors to stature: the intervertebral disc thickness/height. The purpose of this study was…
Temperature and Humidity in the Base-floors of Three Northern Finnish Churches Containing 17th–19th-century Burials
Natural mummification occurs in various favorable conditions. Cold environments have produced mummified human remains in northern Finland. These remains buried under the church floors mummified naturally probably through a process resembling freeze-drying. This chapter explores the conditions that led to the mummification of dozens and potentially hundreds of human remains. To conduct our study, we installed logging temperature and humidity measu…
Newborns, Infants, and Adolescents in Postmedieval Northern Finland
Four coffins dating from the period between the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries from Keminmaa in northern Ostrobothnian Finland were examined using computed-tomography (CT) scanning, a methodology with research applications for exploring human remains, coffins, and funerary textiles. The age and, in two cases, sex of the remains were estimated, and both historical sources and archaeological material suggest that socialization through gender was a…
Body mass estimation in hominins from humeral articular dimensions
The new formulae provide a more secure foundation for estimating hominin body mass from humeri than previously available equations
The association between knee breadth and body mass
OBJECTIVES: Body mass estimation from skeletal dimensions is a useful tool when studying archeological human samples. Bony articular surface dimensions of the lower limb have frequently been utilized to estimate body size. In the present study, we investigated the association between knee breadth and body mass in a Northern European population. Our study aimed to confirm both methodology and results presented in earlier studies. MATERIALS AND MET…

Phylogenetic and environmental effects on limb bone structure in gorillas
OBJECTIVES: The effects of phylogeny and locomotor behavior on long bone structural proportions are assessed through comparisons between adult and ontogenetic samples of extant gorillas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 281 wild-collected individuals were included in the study, divided into four groups that vary taxonomically and ecologically: western lowland gorillas (G. g. gorilla), lowland and highland grauer gorillas (G. b. graueri), and Vir…
Long bone diaphyseal shape follows different ontogenetic trajectories in captive and wild gorillas
OBJECTIVES: A number of studies have demonstrated the ontogenetic plasticity of long bone diaphyseal structure in response to mechanical loading. Captivity should affect mechanical loading of the limbs, but whether captive apes grow differently than wild apes has been debated. Here, we compare captive and wild juvenile and adult Gorilla to ascertain whether growth trajectories in cross-sectional diaphyseal shape are similar in the two environment…

Low trabecular bone density in recent sedentary modern humans
OBJECTIVES: Research on a limited number of samples suggests that trabecular bone density (i.e., bone volume fraction, BVF) within specific articulations is lower among more sedentary Holocene agricultural populations compared with Holocene foragers, implying that activity levels have a significant effect on trabecular BVF. However, it is unclear to what extent BVF differs among groups with varying activity levels and how general this phenomenon …
Suspected tuberculosis in an early 17th-century northern Finnish mummy—A computed tomography case study
Computed tomography of mummified human remains in old Finnish churches, a case study
Mummified human remains have been preserved in the cool, well-ventilated crypts of old Finnish churches, which were popular burial sites among the elite of the early modern period. Here, the authors present the results of a computed tomography study of the remains of an early 17th-century vicar of Keminmaa. They examined the preservation of his remains and made several pathological findings; the causes of the latter possibly had a severe impact o…
Gradual decline in mobility with the adoption of food production in Europe
Significance Declining mobility levels following the Pleistocene had profound effects on human demography, social organization, and health, but the exact timing and pace of this critical change are unknown. Here we examine direct evidence for changing mobility levels from limb bone structural characteristics in a large sample of European skeletons spanning the past 30,000 y. Our results show that mobility first declined during the Neolithic, at t…
Modeling skeletal traits and functions of the upper body
Application of the anatomical method to estimate the maximum adult stature and the age‐at‐death stature
This study focuses on the age adjustment of statures estimated with the anatomical method. The research material includes 127 individuals from the Terry Collection. The cadaveric stature (CSTA)–skeletal height (SKH) ratios indicate that stature loss with age commences before SKH reduction. Testing three equations to estimate CSTA at the age at death and CSTA corrected to maximum stature from SKH indicates that the age correction of stature should…
