Borgund in Western Norway and Pioneering Medieval Archaeology Reassessed
Between 1953 and 1975, the deserted medieval town Borgund witnessed Norway’s most extensive excavations of ordinary people’s settlements outside the still-existing towns. Yet, the substantial archaeological material recovered has remained an underexploited resource in scholarship. The Introduction of Chickens Into Norway and Their Early Use
Chickens reached areas of northern Europe by the 6th to 5th century bce , but their dispersal into Scandinavia appears delayed. Here we present a thorough assessment of chicken remains recovered from Borgund, a deserted late Viking Age–Medieval urban site located near Ålesund on the west coast of Norway. Leather types and tanning technique used on shoes during the late Viking Age / early Medieval Periods in Norway, are addressed with 139 shoes from the deserted town Borgund in Sunnmøre, western Norway, as a case. Shoe-leather is species identified through hair follicle pattern interpretation and ZooMS analysis. Tanning technique is assessed visually. A study of the different food messages that children encounter and their own reflections of these messages was carried out among fifty-nine children from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The children took photos of their “foodscapes,” including school, home, shops, streets, cafés and restaurants.
