Measuring Teachers’ Motivational Styles
Grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this study proposes the Teachers’ Motivational Styles (TMS) questionnaire, a new tool designed to assess how teachers support or frustrate students’ basic psychological needs. Items were developed based on a recent SDT-based taxonomy of need-supportive and need-thwarting teaching behaviors. The questionnaire was administered to 2454 secondary school students in Italy and the United Kingdom. Exploratory…
A Dual Country Validation of the Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction and Frustration Scale
Despite the growing interest in basic psychological needs within educational settings, existing measures fail to distinguish between students' relationships with teachers and classmates, limiting the understanding of how different social dynamics uniquely impact need satisfaction and frustration during adolescence. This study provided psychometric evidence for a refined school‐specific version of the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frus…
Exploring Academic Self‐Efficacy for Self‐Regulated Learning
Academic Self‐Efficacy for Self‐Regulated Learning (ASE for SRL) represents individuals’ belief in their abilities to regulate and organize their learning to achieve academic outcomes, and it is crucial for motivation and students’ well‐being. This study, conducted on a nationally representative sample of 26,564 10th grade Italian students (50.1% female; Mean Age = 15.60), aims to evaluate differences in ASE for SRL. Specifically, we assessed the…

How Classroom Composition and Size Shape Adolescent School Victimization
Adolescent school victimization is a socially regulated experience, making it important to consider classroom-level compositional effects beyond individual characteristics. This study investigated the role of classroom characteristics, specifically, classroom socioeconomic status, average academic achievement, sex composition, immigrant density, and class size, in shaping students’ experiences of school victimization. Victimization was analyzed u…
Daily associations between global self‐esteem and self‐concept clarity and their relationships with subjective well‐being in a sample of adult workers
OBJECTIVES: The present pre-registered study examined the reciprocal day-to-day associations between global self-esteem and self-concept clarity and their incremental validity with respect to daily life satisfaction, positive affect, and negative affect. METHODS: We used intensive longitudinal data from 153 adult workers (45.1% women), over a period of 31 days. Data were analyzed using dynamic structural equation modeling. RESULTS: Results attest…
I RUN CLEAN Project”—An Innovative and Self-Sustainable Approach to Develop Clean Sport Behaviours in Grassroots Athletes
The phenomenon of doping is a public health issue that poses threats to sport and society. In recent decades, the emphasis on efforts to address the issue and reduce the incidence of doping by young people in sport has shifted from deterrence through testing and punishment to the promotion of clean sport behaviours through values-based education. The “I Run Clean project” sought to develop new and effective tools targeting grassroots athletes and…
I Am on Top!”
The use of substances to improve sports performance is a widespread phenomenon among adolescents. Several anti-doping programs have been developed, mainly based on knowledge-based evidence. The main aim of the present study was to implement an anti-doping intervention in sports high school students, based on a psychological framework, such as Socio-Cognitive Theory, through the development of a Serious Game (SG), i.e., digital learning based on t…
Addressing Adolescents’ Prejudice toward Immigrants
According to social learning theory, classrooms are essential socialization contexts for intergroup attitudes, but analyses of contextual factors net of the impact of individual variables affecting prejudice toward immigrants are very limited. This study was conducted on a large sample of Italian adolescents ( N = 2904; M age = 13.70; females = 48.5%; 168 classrooms). It examined the role of classroom contextual factors affecting adolescents’ pre…
Prejudice towards Immigrants
Immigration processes and the possible marginalization of ethnic minorities in the receiving countries are essential issues in contemporary societies. Prejudice and discrimination can be critical obstacles to immigrants' integration into the host country and can severely affect their well-being and mental health. This theoretical and conceptual overview aims to highlight the critical social-psychological processes underlying attitudes toward immi…
Positive Youth Development Among Youth Living in Poverty
Positive developmental outcomes among youth living in poverty have rarely been studied. Despite numerous risk factors, it is important to understand the factors that contribute to positive developmental outcomes among youth in poverty. Using the Self-Determination Theory framework, this two-wave longitudinal study investigated the contribution of basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness to positive developmental outcomes…
Brain network topology and personality traits
Personality neuroscience is focusing on the correlation between individual differences and the efficiency of large‐scale networks from the perspective of the brain as an interconnected network. A suitable technique to explore this relationship is the magnetoencephalography (MEG), but not many MEG studies are aimed at investigating topological properties correlated to personality traits. By using MEG, the present study aims to evaluate how individ…
The Psychometric Properties of the Behavioural Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire (BREQ-3)
The Italian version of the BREQ-3 has proved to be a reliable and valid instrument for measuring the behavioral regulation of exercise in individuals with different demographic characteristics
Adolescents’ Characteristics and Peer Relationships in Class

The Motivational Underpinnings of Intentions to Use Doping in Sport
Doping use is considered as a deviant behavior in sport contexts, and it is necessary to recognize preventive factors to shut down the negative consequences. We proposed that athletes experiencing loss of personal significance would be more prone to doping use intentions. This pathway should occur through the effect of the enhanced predominance of obsessive (vs. harmonious) passion that such athletes experience concerning their sport activity, wh…

Relationship Between Social Context, Self-Efficacy, Motivation, Academic Achievement, and Intention to Drop Out of High School
By means of a longitudinal design the authors sought to determine the role of students’ self-determined motivation in reducing the intention to drop out of high school over time, while taking into account the impact of academic performance and of socioeconomic status. The effects of students’ self-efficacy and perceived support from parents and teachers were examined. A total of 426 students of grades 9–13 completed self-report estimates and thei…
