As soon as Doctor Faustus, in Marlowe's play, has sealed his compact with the Devil, he begins to question Mephistophilis concerning matters that hitherto had been beyond the certain knowledge of mortal beings. His first inquiries relate to the location and nature of Hell, but in the next scene Faustus, after brushing aside an impulse to repent, returns eagerly to his quest for superhuman knowledge with the demand
